  • Inconsistencies in sulfur dioxide emissions from the Canadian oil sands and potential implications

    Open Access•C A McLinden, C Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Satellite-derived and reported sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions from the Canadian oil sands are shown to have been consistent up to 2013. Post-2013, these sources of emissions data diverged, with reported emissions dropping by a factor of two, while satellite-derived emissions for the region remained relatively constant, with the discrepancy (satellite-derived emissions minus reported emissions) peaking at 50 kt(SO 2 ) yr -1 around 2016. The 2013…

  • Spatially and temporally coherent reconstruction of tropospheric NO 2 over China combining OMI and Gome-2B measurements

Open Access•Qin He, Kai Qin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Tropospheric NO 2 columns retrieved from ozone monitoring instrument (OMI) are widely used, even though there is a significant loss of spatial coverage due to multiple factors. This work introduces a framework for reconstructing gaps in the OMI NO 2 data over China by using machine learning and an adaptive weighted temporal fitting method with NO 2 measurements from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment–2B, and surface measurements. The reconstructe…

  • Space-based measurements of air quality during the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai

Open Access•Nan Hao, Pieter Valks et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

During the World Exposition 2010 (Expo, from May to October), emission control measures were implemented in Shanghai and surrounding areas to improve the air quality. To evaluate the effect of these measures, we use the tropospheric NO2 column, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and CO concentration observations from the satellite instruments GOME-2, MODIS and MOPITT, respectively. The analysis shows about 8% and 14% reductions of tropospheric NO2 c…
