The ‘Spectral Others’ of Bauhaus Rationalism: Experiments in Mysticism, Spirituality, Sexuality, and Politics

Kurt Schwitters: Space, image, exile by Megan R. Luke
Few areas of the verbal and visual arts remained untouched by the hand of the remarkable Kurt Schwitters: he was a painter of figurative and abstract canvases, a collagist and sculptor, a photograp

Photography/Topography: Viewing Berlin, 1880/2000
Both photography and the built environment play a significant role in transmitting cultural memory. This article explores how architectural photography might be seen in terms of constructions of cultural identity through Florian Profitlich's book Berlin-Bilder (Berlin Pictures, 1999), one of the most singular photographic books about Berlin to appear since the fall of the Wall and the subsequent reunification of Germany in 1990. Long approaches P…
Paratextual Profusion: Photography and Text in Bertolt Brecht'sWar Primer
Bertolt Brecht's War Primer, first published in 1955, is a collection of what Brecht termed "photo-epigrams." These consist of a photograph-usually one cut from the illustrated press-mounted on a black background and accompanied by a four-line poem by Brecht. The theme of the book is World War II. Critics have tended to view the War Primer as a didactic piece that offers a Marxist corrective to "Western" histories of the war. This article, howeve…
W. G. Sebald - Image, Archive, Modernity: Image, Archive, Modernity
W. G. Sebald is widely acknowledged as one of the most significant writers to have emerged onto the global literary scene in recent decades, and is frequently mentioned in the same breath as Nabokov, Kafka, Borges, Calvino, Proust, and Primo Levi. This book offers an original reading of Sebald's oeuvre, arguing that his work is concerned first and foremost with the problem of modernity. It focuses in particular on the numerous archival institutio…
Intercultural Identities in W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants and Norbert Gstrein's Die englischen Jahre
This paper analyses W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants and Norbert Gstrein's Die englischen Jahre from the perspective of intercultural identity. In Sebald's work, intercultural identity emerges as a political crisis that leads to a series of devastating personal crises: Sebald's protagonists’ inability to fully abandon early ethnic and national identifications results in life-long melancholy whose issue can only be death. For Gstrein, the problem of in…

The Novels of Thomas Bernhard. Form and Its Function
Resisting Bernhard: Women and Violence in Das Kalkwerk, Ja, and Auslöschung
It might initially appear problematical to discuss the violence of Thomas Bernhard's novels specifically in conjunction with women. Most of his texts, after all, represent acts of natural violence and random death whose victims are male, most strikingly in the short prose pieces that constitute Der Stimmenimitator (1978). Two episodes from Frost (1963), however, will clarify what is at stake in the question of Bernhard, women and violence. There …
Spirituality and the Idea of Transcendence
Spirituality is typically defined as a form of experience or understanding which has to do with the realm of the transcendent. Indeed, at a popular level at least, 'spiritual' and 'transcendent' are virtually synonymous as descriptive of that which is lofty, idealistic, elevated or pious. It is in the focus upon feelings and experiences of transcendence that we touch base with what appears to be a central theme in recent attempts to understand th…
Time and Narrative: Wolfgang Hildesheimer’s Tynset and Masante
The existing criticism of Wolfgang Hildesheimer’s Tynset and Masante has categorised the narrative form of the texts as either ‘musical’, ‘spatial’, or ‘stream‐of‐consciousness’. All three approaches, however, fail to take account of the inescapably temporal nature of narrative. This article begins by examining the thematics of temporality in Tynset and Masante. Implicit in both is a conception of time as cyclicality within linearity, the former …
Continuity as a basis for change: Leisure and male retirement
The images, attitudes and activities associated with retirement are changing, but it still represents an important threshold in people's lives. This paper argues that men commonly deal with the changes precipitated by retirement by emphasizing those aspects of their lives that represent continuity. Far from taking-up a set of new activities, it is most usual for retirement to be characterized by more of the same. Much of this continuity is provid…
