Folklore and Literacy
This article describes a pilot project in museum based literacy learning that took place in Windsor, Nova Scotia in the autumn of 1999. The author coordinated the project in close consultation with a local literacy practitioner. The Windsor study was part of a national project undertaken by the Canadian Museums Association and funded by a SSHRC Strategic Research Grant Initiative. Enduring Traditions, Ethereal Transmissions
This paper presents a post-modern discussion of the playful re- creation of Chinese New Year “cards” by Chinese students through the electronic medium of the Internet. “Re-creation” here refers to two distinctive, yet related styles of performance. As with popular culture generally, Chinese popular fiction borrows from elite and folk traditions in the creation of popular texts. This article examines the ways in which martial-arts and romance novel fans construct negotiated readings of masculinity through their interprrtations of two distinctive male character types common in Chinese vernacular fiction, the hero (haohan) and the talented scholar (caizï).
