Political sexism and populism in Serbia
Recent research suggests that sexist attitudes can significantly influence political preferences and electoral behavior. Studies of recent elections in countries such as the United States indicate that sexism is an increasingly important predictor of party preferences. This paper investigates the impact of political sexism on populist party preferences in Serbia. Given that the ruling party, Srpska Napredna Stranka (SNS), exhibits populist charac…
Introducing the comparative study of electoral systems in Tunisia
Although public opinion research has gained prominence in the Middle East and North Africa region since 2011, data on electoral behaviour and political attitudes are scarce and rarely have a comparative focus. This research note introduces a new post-election survey conducted after the 2019 Tunisian elections. The project contributes to the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES) database. In its 26-year history no country other than Israel…
National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic
Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during …

Predicting attitudinal and behavioral responses to Covid-19 pandemic using machine learning
At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multi-national data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social…
Gender differences in perception of the appropriate maturity age for men and women
The paper explores gender differences in the perception of appropriate age for reproduction-related life events. Evolutionary theory suggests that age norms are shaped by gender-specific evolutionary challenges. We tested two hypotheses based on the evolutionary rationale. Hypothesis 1 suggests that both men and women believe that women should reach maturity and experience reproduction-related life events earlier than men. Hypothesis 2 claims tha…
Education, Authoritarianism, and Party Preference in the Balkans
This article examines the thesis that educational cleavage, operating through an authoritarian–libertarian value dimension, has become one of the most important social cleavages that influence political divisions in contemporary Europe. This model, which is a revision of the standard cleavage model of politics, has been developed and tested in the Western European context. However, the validity of this assumption in different social contexts, suc…
Tolerance of Diversity and Diversity of Intolerance
In classical liberal thought, the norm of political tolerance is understood as not being preconditioned by the content of political views. Controversies about the universal vs. relative nature of political tolerance, however, are ubiquitous. Public opinion research has also noted that there is a contradiction between the universal norm of political tolerance and its relative application. This paper examines this universal-relative contradiction u…
Transfer of Variables between Different Data Sets, or Taking “Previous Research” Seriously

An Examination and Revision of the Love Attitude Scale in Serbia
The research reports on results of an initial application of the Love Attitude Scale (Hendrick & Hendrick, 1986) in Serbia. The study was conducted on the sample of 127 respondents, mainly of adolescent age, from Subotica, Serbia. We explored the factor structure of the Love Attitude Scale, analyzed relationships between its subscales, and examined relevant correlates of its dimensions. We also performed extensive item analysis of the scale,…
Between the general and specific
Political tolerance is one of the basic values of a democratic society. At the same time, it is also a controversial value - political freedoms are often used to undermine democratic order. In light of the early findings of low level of political tolerance in Eastern Europe (e.g., Bahry, Boaz & Gordon, 1997; Gibson & Duch, 1993), it is important to investigate both its general level and the association with the support for general democratic norm…
The Structure of Political Attitudes in Hungary and Serbia
The article presents a comparative examination of the structure of political ideology in two post-communist countries, Serbia and Hungary. A broad set of indicators of specific political attitudes is reduced to a smaller number of latent ideological dimensions via factor analysis. The precise meaning of the dimensions is determined after the analysis of their relationships with authoritarianism, out-group sympathy, prejudices, ideological self-id…
Authoritarianism without Dominant Ideology
Since the publication of Adorno, Frenkel‐Brunswik, Levinson, and Sanford's (1950) classic study, considerable debate has developed concerning the political and ideological correlates of authoritarianism. This paper examines relationships between authoritarianism, on the one hand, and self‐identification with ideological labels, attitudes toward political extremists, and party preferences, on the other hand. The survey data have been collected in …
Issues and Party Preferences in Hungary
The article compares proximity and Rabinowitz/Macdonald directional models of issue voting according to their ability to predict preferences for the six Hungarian parliamentary parties. It was assumed that in a relatively new democracy directional models should perform better, since voters would have more difficulty recognizing the exact positions of parties on different issue dimensions. Furthermore, it was assumed that political sophistication …
The Hungarian Voter
The left–right (L–R) ideological dimension has been regarded as a useful cognitive device for orientation in the political realm. Thanks to its absorptive nature it is able to represent a party’s stands on various issues simultaneously. This article specifies a number of conditions that its use ought to satisfy in order to function as a “rational” clue for parties’ positions on issues. The perceived position of parties on the L–R dimension should…
Structure versus culture again
Various authors have hypothesized that corporatist institutional arrangements favor the development of ‘new politics’: new social movements, concern for issues such as peace and ecology, postmaterialist orientation and voting for left‐libertarian parties. This article analyzes the relationships between corporatism and ‘new politics’ using Siaroff's (1999 ) corporatism scores for 16 West European countries and data from Inglehart et al.'s (1998 ) …
Minority political parties and ethnic voting in subotica
The article analyses the dimensionality of political party preferences, and the strength of the ‘ethnic voting’ on a sample of respondents from Subotica, Yugoslavia. Ethnic heterogeneity of the district of Subotica facilitated the proliferation of parties and organizations claiming to represent national minorities, primarily Hungarians, Croats and Bunejvci. Factor analysis of preferences for parties participating at local elections in 1996 showed…
