  • Development and Calibration of a Spatial Model for the Analysis of Paleolithic Archaeological Potential in the Duero Basin of the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•Amanda Merino-Pelaz, M De Andrés-Herrero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2025•Referências: 3

The development of spatial modeling has made it possible to address the problem of the spatial location of archaeological sites in the territory with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Applications range from predicting the density and distribution of archaeological sites to modeling and understanding the occupation patterns of past cultures. However, theory-driven deductive strategies for site location modeling are needed in cases…

  • More than a fingerprint on a pebble

    Open Access•David Álvarez-Alonso, M De Andrés-Herrero et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 84

The pebble discovered in the San Lázaro rock-shelter (Segovia, Central Spain) is the oldest known non-utilitarian object with a fingerprint made in Europe. Its morphology and the strategic position of an ocher dot, where a dermatoglyphic image has been detected, may be evidence of symbolic behavior. This object contributes to our understanding of Neanderthals' capacity for abstraction, suggesting that it could represent one of the earliest human …

  • Designing an instrument to measure attitudes toward flood risk management in riverside populations

Open Access•Maria Amérigo, Fernando Talayero et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

Addressing flood risk management (FRM) from an integrated and multidimensional perspective is crucial for effective flood management. Several studies advocate involving the affected populations in the decisions on the implementation of FRM measures, but only a few focus on systematically analyzing the citizens’ opinions on such measures. From a psycho-environmental approach, the main objective of this study was to design an instrument, a Likert-t…

  • Dendrogeomorphological Evidence of Flood Frequency Changes and Human Activities (Portainé Basin, Spanish Pyrenees)

    Open Access•Mar Génova, Andrés Díez-Herrero et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2018

The Portainé mountain catchment, containing the Port Ainé ski resort (Lleida, Spanish Pyrenees), displays active erosional and depositional phenomena caused by periodic torrential floods. These events present a potential risk and incur significant economic losses. In ungauged remote catchments (like Portainé), trees might be the only paleohydrological source of information regarding past floods. Thus, we estimated the temporal and spatial distrib…

  • The rock shelter Abrigo del Molino (Segovia, Spain) and the timing of the late Middle Paleolithic in Central Iberia

    Open Access•Martin Kehl, David Álvarez-Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The timing of the late Middle Paleolithic and late disappearance of Neanderthals in the Iberian Peninsula are hotly debated subjects in Paleolithic archeology. Several studies suggested a late survival in South and Central Iberia until about 32 ka, but were probably subject to significant age underestimation due to contamination of dating samples, undiagnostic lithic assemblages, and/or lack of stratigraphic integrity. We conducted a radiocarbon …

  • How to Improve Dendrogeomorphic Sampling

    Carolina Guardiola-Albert, Carolina Guardiola‐Albert et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2015

Knowledge of the spatial heterogeneity of wood is useful for industrial applications and improving dendrogeomorphic sampling, because it allows a better understanding of 3-D wood density structure in tree stems damaged by geomorphic processes. X-ray computed tomography (XRCT) scanning as a means of non-destructive measurement has become an important technique in tree research as it allows the detection of internal variations in wood density. In t…

  • Historical floods and dendrochronological dating of a wooden deck in the Old Mint of Segovia, Spain

    Open Access•Mar Génova, Juan Antonio Ballesteros‐Cánovas et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

During recent archaeological work carried out in the 16th‐century Segovia Mint, Spain, a wooden deck of Pinus sylvestris was revealed covering the hydraulic canals. Dendrochronological analyses allowed us to estimate the dates that trees were felled in order to effect repairs to canals damaged after extraordinary flood events. There are at least three age clusters: (1) 1677–1678; (2) 1690–1698–1700; and (3) 1713–1720–1721–1742. By comparing dendr…

  • Changes in Wood Anatomy in Tree Rings of Pinus pinaster Ait. Following Wounding by Flash Floods

    Juan Antonio Ballesteros‐Cánovas, J A Ballesteros et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2010

This paper analyzes the anatomical response of Pinus pinaster Ait. following wounding by flash floods. A total of 14 wood samples were taken from 14 different scarred trees located on the river banks of the Arroyo Cabrera torrent (Spanish Central System). In addition, 20 increment cores were collected from undisturbed and healthy P. pinaster trees to build a local reference chronology. For the injured trees, analysis focused on growth changes in …

  • Analysis of potential direct insolation as a degradation factor of cave paintings in Villar del Humo, Cuenca, Central Spain

    Open Access•Andrés Díez-Herrero, Andres Díez‐Herrero et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Citada por: 3

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of direct sunlight on eleven given points of interest in Villar del Humo (Cuenca, Central Spain), and to determine to what extent this direct insolation, which is affected by both the regional and the local geomorphological configuration, influences the state and type of degradation of the paintings or of the host rock. The analysis of potential direct insolation with geographical information syst…
