  • Counterfactual mood in Czech, German, Norwegian, and Russian

    Open Access•Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Natural Language Semantics•2024•Referências: 53

The type of mood or tense marking that causes counterfactuality inferences-as figuring prominently, but far from exclusively, in counterfactual conditionals-has not yet received a comprehensive and compositional analysis. Focusing on four languages, the paper presents under-appreciated facts and a novel theory where the mood serves to activate alternatives to modal operators, particularly one: the identity operator, often giving rise to counterfa…

  • Polarity subjunctives in German and Russian

    Open Access•Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Language•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Subjunctives are typically used in intensional, or modal, contexts to talk about possible worlds, but they can also be licensed in negative contexts. While prior work has sought to unify these ‘polarity’ subjunctives with ‘intensional’ subjunctives, in this article I build a case that they represent, in German and Russian at least, a distinct use as negative polarity items (NPIs). This usage fills a gap in the typology of NPIs: unlike known items…

  • To Finish in German and Mainland Scandinavian

Open Access•Alexandra Anna Spalek, Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2019

Among the words that describe initial or final parts of events, words describing finishing stand out in a number of ways: in a language like English, there is a transitive verb which is singularly flexible regarding the type of event retrievable from the context; in a language like German, there is no verb but there is a verbal particle; in either case, there is a requirement of telicity and there is a requirement of theme incrementality. The pre…

  • Reports of Specific Indefinites

    Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2013

Utterances of sentences with an indefinite can sometimes be reported with a referential term instead, notably if the indefinite was ‘specific’ but a referential term would not have been appropriate in the original utterance situation. This motivates a reassessment of indefinites and of speech reports. Under the proposed analyses, specific indefinites are referential with respect to what will be called the speaker’s context, as distinct from the c…

  • Natural language corpus semantics

    Open Access•Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2004

This paper addresses the methodological issue of what data can safely be disregarded in the quest for a good analysis of a given semantic phenomenon. I argue that as there is no objective measure for this, making the temptation to adjust the terrain to the map hard to resist, it is strongly advisable to make use of text corpora in formal semantic research. I illustrate this argument by considering in some detail the recent history of research on …

  • Infinitive Perfect and Backward Causation

    Open Access•Kjell Johan Sæbø•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1980

The present paper represents an attempt to explain the semantically deviant nature of causative constructions with present perfect effect sentences. As far as I known, such constructions have not been commented upon in the literature on causativity. I show that any counterfactual analysis of the traditional sort will bring them out as synthetic sentences, provided they are syntactically well-formed. On the other hand, if the notion os counterfact…
