‘We want to be the hosts of this story’
Debates abound regarding how to use land for nature recovery and environmental governance. Such decisions require an understanding of benefits and trade‐offs, and increasingly rely on vast quantities of data, delivered through digital technologies. However, barriers such as data accessibility, adequacy, communication, knowledge types and technical capabilities prevent more equitable engagement with such decision‐making. Efforts to improve this in…
How can ecosystem services scenarios inform forest planning?—Seven lessons from Leanachan Forest, Scotland
There are growing societal expectations that forests are managed for multiple benefits including carbon storage, biodiversity, health and recreation. Consequently, forest managers are increasingly expected to consider how external factors, including climate change, affect the future of their forests and the wider public benefits they provide. But traditional silvicultural methods providing production forecasts based on mensuration surveys and sit…
The limitations and risks of land use change tools in decision-making
Land use change is needed to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss and is increasingly incentivised through natural capital approaches that reward delivery of ecosystem services including carbon sequestration and biodiversity. A proliferation of land use change decision-support tools are developed –often by private companies– to support land use change decision-making and measure success of government policy and private investment targets…
Managing environmental knowledge networks to navigate complexity
Environmental knowledge networks (EKNs) link research collaborators in a common purpose to produce data and knowledge to better understand social-ecological phenomena and address environmental challenges. Over recent years, as scientists have grappled with how to produce data and actionable knowledge for conservation and sustainability, more EKNs have been established. Although each network is founded for its own purposes and maintains its own go…
Research note
The Jul'hoan people from lXaelxae, Botswana, have an active repertoire of songs accompanied by leg rattles and hand clapping that are part of what is known as a trance dance. It was found that a specific group of Jul'hoan people, who used a finite set of 12 songs, was able to identify a song in the majority of the cases by listening only to hand clapping. The participants suggested that 'speed' or 'relative pace' was diagnostic. This suggestion w…
‘Bonkers but good!’ – Using illustration-based interview methods to understand land management and conservation visions
Visions help to understand common ground and tensions among citizens and stakeholders, supporting inclusive land management and conservation solutions to the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. With careful design and sufficient resource, it is possible to bring together communities and other stakeholders to share perspectives and deliberate desired futures, identifying more acceptable alternatives and avoiding costly delays. We evaluated …
Regional scale integrated land use planning to meet multiple objectives
Pressure is increasing globally to deliver integrated land use at large spatial scales (10–100 s km2) to address the climate and biodiversity emergencies through delivery of nature-based solutions. There is also pressure to decentralise land use decision-making to sub-national levels of government and multi-stakeholder partnerships, with the aim of improving policy targeting, coordination and participation. Whilst there has been significant resea…
Navigating tensions in inclusive conservation
Inclusive conservation is promoted as a means to integrate stakeholders in nature, conservation. Despite several studies recognizing that inclusive conservation of protected areas may be challenging and requires explicitly addressing potential tensions between stakeholders, little research has unpacked how these tensions manifest in specific contexts. This paper aims to explore possible approaches for navigating tensions to improve the facilitati…
Glocal woodlands – The rescaling of forest governance in Scotland
As a response to global crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, the UN has called for restoring a billion hectares of land. In recognition, both governments and the private sector have pledged to restore landscapes through planting millions of hectares of forests. Private sector investment is to play a critical role in meeting these goals, through instruments such as biodiversity offsetting, philanthropy, voluntary carbon markets, sustain…
In danger of co-option
Community ownership and management of land has gained prominence in environmental policy discussions, especially within land restoration debates. Within Scotland, community land ownership is promoted as a means to give communities greater say over land use decisions, receive a greater share of the benefits from land, and help deliver a just transition to the government of Scotland’s net-zero targets. These goals are supported by legal mechanisms …
Multifunctionality of a peri-urban landscape
Developing successful policies for sustainable land use requires understanding the perspectives of different actors. This study explored how residents – an often under-represented and un-organized group – vary in their valuation of ecosystem services (ES) and perception of multifunctionality in a peri-urban setting. We conducted 127 interviews in the Kromme Rijn region of the Netherlands guided by an interactive, visual canvas tool (STREAMLINE). …
How stable are visions for protected area management? Stakeholder perspectives before and during a pandemic
Envisioning processes enable protected area managers to chart a course for future management to reach desired goals, but unexpected changes that could affect future visions are not usually considered. The global COVID‐19 pandemic provided an opportunity to explore changes in stakeholder visions, the values that underpin the visions, and their perceptions of landscape changes and the underlying drivers (e.g. climate change, mass tourism and demogr…
Inclusive conservation and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
The draft Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework commits to achievement of equity and justice outcomes and represents a ‘‘relational turn’’ in how we understand inclusive conservation. Although ‘‘inclusivity’’ is drawn on as a means to engage diverse stakeholders, widening the framing of inclusivity can create new tensions with regard to how to manage protected areas. We first offer a set of tensions that emerge in the light of the relational tu…
Understanding knowledge needs for Scotland to become a resilient Hydro Nation
Freshwater resources provide ecosystem services that support human prosperity and development. Future changes in climate, land-use, and population could lead to detrimental impacts on freshwater quality and quantity, threatening drinking water, irrigation and energy production. To increase resilience there is the need to better understand the possible impacts of future changes on freshwaters. We use Scotland – and its legislative agenda ‘Scotland…
Elucidating social-ecological perceptions of a protected area system in Interior Alaska
The Interior of Alaska is one of the few remaining places in the world with intact ecosystems. Protected areas in this region, particularly Denali National Park and Preserve and Denali State Park, are high-profile tourism destinations situated in a rural landscape that is inhabited by a diverse array of stakeholders. Public land management agencies are faced with the challenging task of engaging these rural residents in discussions about their re…
Contributions of Scottish community woodlands to local wellbeing before and during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has impaired wellbeing and highlighted the importance of open, local greenspaces in supporting healthy lifestyles and providing safe social spaces. Community woodlands, environments managed by and for communities, offer a wealth of individual and communal wellbeing benefits which are likely to have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. A mixed-methods study, involving 31 semi-structured interviews and 765 questionnaire res…

Ecosystem Service Supply and Vulnerability to Global Change in Europe
Global change will alter the supply of ecosystem services that are vital for human well-being. To investigate ecosystem service supply during the 21st century, we used a range of ecosystem models and scenarios of climate and land-use change to conduct a Europe-wide assessment. Large changes in climate and land use typically resulted in large changes in ecosystem service supply. Some of these trends may be positive (for example, increases in fores…

The Sociocultural Value of Upland Regions in the Vicinity of Cities in Comparison With Urban Green Spaces
Mountain and upland regions provide a wide range of ecosystem services to residents and visitors. While ecosystem research in mountain regions is on the rise, the linkages between sociocultural benefits and ecological systems remain little explored. Mountainous regions close to urban areas provide numerous benefits to a large number of individuals, suggesting a high social value, particularly for cultural ecosystem services. We explored and compa…
Understanding global climate change scenarios through bioclimate stratification
Despite progress in impact modelling, communicating and understanding the implications of climatic change projections is challenging due to inherent complexity and a cascade of uncertainty.
