Paul the Deacon between Justinian and Bologna

Population History and Mitochondrial Genetic Substructure of the Rama Amerindians from Nicaragua
The Rama are a coastal population from southern Nicaragua who in large part were able to resist, at least for a time, the cultural changes and social reorganization brought on by colonial and modern influences. Historical information leaves the Rama origins and biological relationships with nearby extinct and extant groups ambiguous. The objective of this study was to examine the internal genetic microdifferentiation based on the first hypervaria…

The genetic prehistory of the New World Arctic
Arctic genetics comes in from the cold Despite a well-characterized archaeological record, the genetics of the people who inhabit the Arctic have been unexplored. Raghavan et al. sequenced ancient and modern genomes of individuals from the North American Arctic (see the Perspective by Park). Analyses of these genomes indicate that the Arctic was colonized 6000 years ago by a migration separate from the one that gave rise to other Native American …
Effect of Recent Historical Events on Migration and Isonymic Stratification among the Rama Amerindians from Nicaragua
The Rama Amerindians from southern Nicaragua are one of few indigenous populations inhabiting the east coast and lowlands of southern Central America. Early-eighteenth-century ethnohistorical accounts depicted the Rama as a mobile hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist group dispersed in household units along southern Nicaraguan rivers. However, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Rama settlement patterns changed to aggregated communitie…
Microevolution, migration, and the population structure of five Amerindian populations from Nicaragua and Costa Rica
OBJECTIVE: This research examines the coevolution of languages and uniparental genetic marker (mitochondrial DNA [mtDNA] and nonrecombining Y-chromosome [NRY]) variation within five Lower Central American (Rama, Chorotega, Maléku, Zapatón-Huetar, and Abrojo-Guaymí) Amerindian groups. This pattern occurred since European contact. METHODS: We examined mtDNA sequence variation from the hypervariable region 1 (HVS-1) and NRY genetic variation using s…

Genetic drift and the population history of the Irish travellers
The Irish Travellers are an itinerant group in Ireland that has been socially isolated. Two hypotheses have been proposed concerning the genetic origin of the Travellers: (1) they are genetically related to Roma populations in Europe that share a nomadic lifestyle or (2) they are of Irish origin, and genetic differences from the rest of Ireland reflect genetic drift. These hypotheses were tested using data on 33 alleles from 12 red blood cell pol…

The Genetic Structure of the Kuwaiti Population
This study investigated: (1) the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variation in 116 unrelated individuals who originated from the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, or were of Bedouin ethnicity and (2) the genetic structure of Kuwaiti populations and compared it to their neighboring populations. These subpopulations were tested for genetic homogeneity and shown to be heterogeneous. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and mtDNA sequencing analys…

Paternal Genetic History of the Basque Population of Spain
This study examines the genetic variation in Basque Y chromosome lineages using data on 12 Y-short tandem repeat (STR) loci in a sample of 158 males from four Basque provinces of Spain (Alava, Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa, and Navarre). As reported in previous studies, the Basques are characterized by high frequencies of haplogroup R1b (83%). AMOVA analysis demonstrates genetic homogeneity, with a small but significant amount of genetic structure between p…

Ancient human genome sequence of an extinct Palaeo-Eskimo
We report here the genome sequence of an ancient human. Obtained from ∼4,000-year-old permafrost-preserved hair, the genome represents a male individual from the first known culture to settle in Greenland. Sequenced to an average depth of 20×, we recover 79% of the diploid genome, an amount close to the practical limit of current sequencing technologies. We identify 353,151 high-confidence single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), of which 6.8% hav…
Genetic Architecture of a Small, Recently Aggregated Aleut Population
The fishing community of Bering Island, located in the Russian Commander Islands off the Kamchatka Peninsula, was originally founded by a small number of Russian soldiers and merchants, along with Aleuts forcibly relocated from the western region of the Aleutian archipelago. The purpose of this study is to characterize the genetic variation of Bering Island inhabitants for autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y-chromosome DNA and classic genetic markers…

Republican Denarii in Romania
One of the most remarkable phenomena within the pattern of monetary circulation in antiquity is the presence of large numbers of Roman Republican denarii, for the most part struck between c. 130 and 31 B.C., on the soil of present-day Romania, roughly ancient Dacia. Absolute figures are impressive; it has been calculated that taking together isolated finds, hoards closing with Republican pieces, nuclei of Republican coins in Roman Imperial hoards…
Mitochondrial DNA Variation and the Origins of the Aleuts
The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in 179 Aleuts from five different islands (Atka, Unalaska, Umnak, St. Paul, and St. George) and Anchorage was analyzed to better understand the origins of Aleuts and their role in the peopling of the Americas. Mitochondrial DNA samples were characterized using polymerase chain reaction amplification, restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, and direct sequencing of the first hypervariable segment …
Money and Exchange in the Roman World
A wide variety of objects may function as money in the different uses which this possesses—for payment, for storing wealth, for measuring value and as a means of exchange. In the Roman world coined money was clearly dominant over other forms of money in the first three uses, and I want here to explore the extent to which it served as a means of exchange, partly because this is the most distinctive function of money and one for which coined money …
Are the Biological Differences Between North American Indians and Eskimos Truly Profound? [and Comments and Reply]
A prevailing view in North American anthropology is that Eskimos are descendants of the most recent migrants from Siberia and are more closely related to Asiatic Mongoloids than to Indians. The assumption of Eskimo-Indian biological distinctiveness is challenged by genetic-marker and cranial data, analyzed separately and then compared, for populations from the Arctic, Subarctic, Northwest Coast, and Great Plains. Genetic distances and cluster ana…

Origins of Aleuts and the Genetic Structure of Populations of the Archipelago
We summarize the results of a field and laboratory research program (1999–2006) in the Aleutian Islands on the origins of the inhabitants of the archipelago and the genetic structure of these populations. The Aleuts show closest genetic affinity to the contemporary Siberian Eskimos and Chukchi of Chukotka and differ significantly from the populations of Kamchatka (the terminus of the archipelago) and Alaskan Eskimos. Our findings support the hypo…
Genomic Diversity at Thirteen Short Tandem Repeat Loci in a Substructured Caste Population, Golla, of Southern Andhra Pradesh, India
Genomic diversity based on 13 short tandem repeat (STR) loci was studied in seven population groups of a substructured Golla caste from Chittoor district in southern Andhra Pradesh, India. These groups are traditionally pastoral, culturally homogeneous, and strictly endogamous. Blood samples were drawn from 317 individuals from 30 Golla villages. The 13 STR loci analyzed in five standard multiplex polymerase chain reactions were: (1) CSF1R, TH01,…
The Origins of Native Americans. Evidence from Anthropological Genetics
Who are the Native Americans? When and how did they colonize the New World? What proportion of the biological variation in contemporary Amerindian populations was 'made in America' and what was brought from Siberia? This book is a unique synthesis of the genetic, archaeological and demographic evidence concerning the native peoples of the Americas, using case studies from contemporary Amerindian and Siberian indigenous groups to unravel the myste…
Genetic structure of the Aleuts and Circumpolar populations based on mitochondrial DNA sequences
The mtDNA variation of 198 Aleuts, as well as North American and Asian populations drawn from the literature, were analyzed to reconstruct the Aleuts' genetic prehistory and to investigate their role in the peopling of the Circumarctic region. From median‐joining network analysis, three star‐like clusters were identified in the Aleuts within the following subhaplogroups: A3, A7 (an Aleut‐specific subclade of A3), and D2. Mismatch analyses, neutra…
Population structure of Alaskan and Siberian indigenous communities
Genetic data consisting of 14 red cell antigen groups and 11 serum and erythrocytic protein marker systems from four Eskimo populations of the Norton Sound area of Alaska are reported. The population structure of these four groups is analyzed both separately and within the larger context by comparison to 15 other circumpolar groups. These analyses reveal a good fit between genetic structure, geographic distribution, linguistic affiliation, and th…
Transmissible and nontransmissible components of anthropometric variation in the Alexanderwohl Mennonites
A study of the intergenerational transmissibilities of 34 anthropometric measures from the Alexanderwohl Mennonite congregations of Kansas and Nebraska is presented. Results presented tend to confirm the suggestion made previously by us (Devor et al., 1985) that patterns of transmissibility conform to a concept of “functional multifactorial complexes” operating in the body in a way analogous to the “field” concept of dental morphology
Human biology in Mexico. II. A comparison of blood group, serum and red cell enzyme frequencies, and genetic distances of the Indian populations of Mexico
Three hundred and ninety‐five individuals from two populations from the State of Tlaxcala, Mexico, were studied in relation to the ABO, Rh, MNS, P, Kell, Lewis, Diego, Kidd, Duffy, Haptoglobin, Transferrin, Group specific component, Albumin, Acid Phosphatase and Phosphoglucomutase systems. One of the populations (San Pablo del Monte) is Indian, while the other (City of Tlaxcala) is Mestizo. The alleles which show variation in the Mestizo populati…
Population structure and anthropometric variation in rural western Ireland
The study of human population structure allows the assessment of cultural and historical influences on mating probabilities, and, hence, genetic variation. A commonly used model is isolation by distance, which predicts a negative exponential relationship between genetic similarity and geographic distance. Anthropometric data collected during the 1930's for 261 adult women in 12 towns of rural western Ireland were used to test the isolation by dis…
Discrete dental trait asymmetry in Mexican and Belizean groups
Discrete dental trait asymmetry was scored on four Mexican Indian and two Afro‐Belizean groups. The Mexican populations show significantly higher mean asymmetry than the two populations from Belize even though the Belizean groups have larger teeth. Point biserial coefficients of correlation between asymmetry of discrete traits and tooth size is low and in most cases not significant. This study indicates that populational and ethnic differences ex…
HLA Genes in the Chuvashian Population from European Russia
HLA alleles have been determined for the first time in individuals from the Chuvashian population by DNA typing and sequencing. HLA-A, -B, -DR, and -DQ allele frequencies and extended haplotypes have also been determined, and the results compared to those for Central Europeans, Siberians and other Asians, Caucasians, Middle Easterners, and Mediterranean peoples. Genetic distances, neighbor-joining dendrograms, and correspondence analysis have bee…
Anthropometric variation and the population history of Ireland
Genetic variation among human populations can reflect a combination of contemporary patterns of gene flow and genetic drift as well as long‐term population relationships due to population history. We examine the likely impact of past history and contemporary structure on the patterns of anthropometric variation among 31 counties in Ireland (made up of the two nations of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). Data for 17 anthropometric mea…

Population structure and admixture in transplanted Tlaxcaltecan populations
The history of the Indian populations from the Valley of Tlaxcala since the Spanish conquest of Mexico has been one of fission and transplantation. A number of Tlaxcaltecan families were relocated by the Spanish and founded new communities such as Saltillo and Cuanalan outside the Valley of Tlaxcala. The contemporary genetic structure of these people reflects their ethnohistory. Genetic distances between Tlaxcaltecan groups are the result of diff…
Gene flow and genetic microdifferentiation of a transplanted Tlaxcaltecan Indian population
This study is one portion of a research program on: (1) the genetic effects of transplantation of Mexican Indian populations into diverse environments; (2) the effect of Spanish colonization on the genetics of Mexico. In 1591, 91 Tlaxcaltecan families were transplanted into northern Mexico to aid in the pacification of the Chichimec Indians. The descendants of these migrants are the residents of the City of Saltillo in the state of Coahuila. Sinc…
Discrete dental traits in four Tlaxcaltecan Mexican populations
Seven hundred dental casts from four Tlaxcaltecan Indian populations of Mexico were analyzed for the incidence of ten discrete dental traits. The populations are of known historical origin, with Cuanalan and Saltillo transplanted from the Valley of Tlaxcala approximately 400 years ago. Given this temporal and geographical separation of these transplanted populations from the parental gene pool, statistically significant morphological divergence w…

The introduction of the denarius system—gold with the types Head of Mars / Eagle, denarii, bronze of sextantal standard and victoriati—can now be dated within the brief period between early 213 B.C., when the quadrigatus was still in issue and late 211 B.C., by which time coins of the denarius system had reached Morgantina. With this dating it becomes possible to give an exact account of the breakdown of Rome's earlier coinage system and add cons…
Control-Marks and the Organization of the Roman Republican Mint
Rome under the Republic, from its beginnings as a small barbarian community, gradually took over the Greek world. It then transformed itself and its subjects into an Empire of remarkable stability and continuity of institutions. Similarly, the Roman Republican coinage, modelled originally on that of the Greek citystates of S. Italy, became under Augustus the coinage of the Empire. It would be interesting to know to what extent, if at all, the Rep…
A Roman Republican Hoard from Capalbio
In the course of building operations near Capalbio in the summer of 1949 a small hoard of Roman Republican silver was found by one of the workmen. The exact find-spot is not known, but it seems to have been close to the Via Aurelia, where this passes Lago San Floriano. The coins were contained in an earthenware jar, which was destroyed. Doris Taylor Bishop, who was excavating at Cosa at the time, was told of the discovery, prevented the hoard fro…

A Roman Representation of the ΚΕΡΑΜΟΣ ΤΡΩΙΚΟΣ
The denarii of M'. Fonteius, to be dated about 107 B.C., fall into two basic varieties, the first much more common than the second: The heads of the Dioscuri on the obverse of the first variety presumably allude to the Tusculan origin of the moneyer, the ship perhaps to the transmarine origin of the family of the founder of Tusculum; but the symbolism of the second variety, for reasons which are unclear, is considerably more complex. The letters …
Human biology in Tlaxcala, Mexico
A demographic survey was conducted as part of an ongoing population study of large Mestizo and Indian communities in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Comparative data on population structure and movement, mate selection, age at marriage, differential fertility, and mortality were collected through the administration of a standardized demographic proforma, and then cross‐tabulated by computer analysis. The resulting differences between the Indian and Mestizo pop…
Foedus and Sponsio
The legal problem is easily posed. Gaius, in iii, 92–4, records that the making of an agreement by the use of the word spondeo , was confined to Roman citizens. The agreement which resulted from the use of the word, namely verborum obligatio or stipulatio , was apparently sanctioned by the Twelve Tables and may thus be regarded as forming part of the earliest Roman legal system. But Gaius goes on to record that his sources allowed one case when a…

The Publication of the Prices Edict
At the bottom of the fifth column of what is now the ninth block of the Aezani copy of the Prices Edict of Diocletian there stand fifteen lines of Greek; of these, the end of line nine and lines ten to fifteen are transcribed by R. and F.
