  • The rise and fall of a person-case constraint in Breton

  • Mihi est from Brythonic to Breton II

    Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2021

Middle Breton (MB) presents an anomaly of pronominal argument coding in imperative and mihi est HAVE constructions: objects can be accusative proclitics only in 1st/2nd person, while unique enclitics appear in 3rd person. Part II traces the history of object coding: Independent > enclitic coding originates in unavailability of accusative object mesoclitics in V1 imperatives by Vendryes’ Restriction in Brythonic, and nonagreement with nominative o…

  • Mihi est from Brythonic to Breton I

    Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2020

Middle Breton (MB) presents a singular anomaly of pronominal argument coding. Objects are accusative proclitics save in two constructions, where coding is split by person: 3rd unique enclitics ~ 1st/2nd accusative proclitics. The constructions are HAVE, from Insular Celtic mihi est, where the new coding replaces inflectional nominatives (cf. Latin mihi est ~ sunt); and imperatives, where it replaces accusative enclitics in V1 (cf. French aide-moi…

  • Pozdně paleolitické a mezolitické osídlení Šumavy

    Open Access•Katarína Kapustka, Jan Eigner et al.•ARTICLE•Památky archeologické•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

The main objective of the article is to present knowledge of newly discovered sites in the mountainous environment of Šumava (Bohemian Forest). The fieldwork in 2011–2019 identified a total of 30 new sites that can be dated to the Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. The research of prehistoric settlement of the mountainous regions of Bohemia remained a neglected topic for many years. The presence of hunters-gatherers in the mountains in the…

  • The structural ergative of Basque and the theory of Case

Open Access•Milan Rezac, Pablo Albizu et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2014•Citada por: 13•Referências: 110

  • Case and Licensing

    Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2013•Citada por: 3•Referências: 58

This remark argues for the Case-theoretic concept of Case as a syntactic licensing requirement of DPs related to their case morphology, against alternatives where DPs need no syntactic licensing, or where their case morphology is unrelated to it. The argument is made from constraints on combining exceptional Case marking (ECM) and the double object construction, where there is a single object Agree/Case locus for two DPs. The mechanisms and natur…

  • Cyclic Agree

    Susana Bejar, Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2009•Citada por: 83•Referências: 32

We propose that agreement displacement phenomena sensitive to person hierarchies arise from the mechanism of Agree operating on articulated φ-feature structures in a cyclic syntax. Cyclicity and locality derive a preference for agreement control by the internal argument. Articulation of the probe determines (a) when the agreement controller cyclically displaces to the external argument and (b) differences in crosslinguistic sensitivity to person …

  • Escaping the Person Case Constraint

    Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation Yearbook•2006

The Person Case Constraint (PCC) blocks a 1st/2nd person DP from Agree and Case assignment if it is separated from a probe by an intervener. I examine four separate strategies that circumvent the PCC: through giving the blocked DP case and agreement that would not otherwise be possible ( absolutive displacement Basque; Jahnsson’s Rule in Finnish), by realizing the intervener elsewhere ( 3 to 5 Demotion in French), or by realizing the DP’s person …

  • Person Licensing and the Derivation of PCC Effects

    Susana Bejar, Milan Rezac•CHAPTER•Romance linguistics•2003

    1. The Person Case Constraint The Person-Case Constraint (PCC) is a universal condition on the distribution of marked person features in certain configurations. First thoroughly investigated by Bonet (1991), she concluded that in combinations of a direct and indirect object, both of which are phonologically weak, the direct object may not be 1 or 2 person (Bonet 1991:177). The following French example has analogues in all the Romance languages, a…

  • The Fine Structure of Cyclic Agree

    Open Access•Milan Rezac•ARTICLE•Syntax•2003•Citada por: 55•Referências: 17

This paper argues for an implementation of cyclicity through a natural economy condition, the Earliness Principle (EP), which requires a feature to be eliminated as early as possible. EP predicts that the search space for feature checking should increase throughout the derivation with the growth of the phrase marker. This prediction is shown to be manifested in "agreement displacement," where agreement morphology under certain conditions cross-re…
