Effects of Retirement on Marital Conflict Tactics
This study explores whether spouses' retirement influences their use of selected conflict tactics using panel data from the National Survey of Families and Households ( N = 559 couples). The findings suggest that effects of surrogate parenting differ by gender, and that they are partially contingent on grandparents' vulnerabilities (marital status, education, and presence of childless dependent children in the household) before grandchildren join the household. Using Couple Data as a Methodological Tool
The paper demonstrates the use of couple data as a methodological tool. Using Straus's Conflict Tactics Scale as an example, it is shown that couple data may be used for the evaluation of scale items and for the assessment of the validity of frequency estimates of violence and its relationship with other variables. The results provide clear evidence that aggregate husband-wife data cannot substitute for couple data
