  • On the Origin of Convention

    Open Access•John B Van Huyck, Raymond C Battalio et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•1997•Citada por: 5•Referências: 24

We report the results of a coordination game experiment. The experiment carefully distinguishes between conventions based on labels and conventions based on populations. Our labels treatments investigate the abstraction assumptions that underlie the concept of a strategy, while our population treatments investigate the attraction of alternative mutually consistent ways to play under adaptive behaviour. We observe conventions emerging in communiti…

  • Selection Dynamics, Asymptotic Stability, and Adaptive Behavior

John B Van Huyck, Joseph P Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1994•Citada por: 4

Selection dynamics are often used to distinguish stable and unstable equilibria. This is particularly useful when multiple equilibria prevent a priori comparative static analysis. This paper reports an experiment designed to compare the accuracy of the myopic best-response dynamic and an inertial selection dynamic. The inertial selection dynamic makes more accurate predictions about the observed mutual best-response outcomes. Copyright 1994 by Un…

  • History's Role in Coordinating Decentralized Allocation Decisions

Donald J Meyer, John B Van Huyck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1992•Citada por: 6

What causes individual suppliers to allocate goods in such a way that the aggregate allocation satisfies the law of one price? A satisfactory answer to this question must confront two related problems: equal net prices at all allocations provide no information to suppliers about the quantity to deliver to a specific location and strategic uncertainty makes an observed violation of the law of one price an unreliable indicator of a profit opportuni…

  • Commodity-Choice Behavior with Pigeons as Subjects

    Raymond C Battalio, John H Kagel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1981•Citada por: 6•Referências: 1

Starting from an initial (baseline) budget line, income-compensated price changes always resulted in substitution effects consistent with the Slutsky-Hicks theory. This behavior cannot be explained by a simple random-behavior model. Similar changes in relative prices that did not originate from the initial (baseline) budget line resulted in "undersubstitution effects": The composition of consumption changed in the expected direction, but the magn…

  • Income Distributions in Two Experimental Economies

    Raymond C Battalio, John H Kagel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1977•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

Data on individual labor earnings are reported from two experimental economies where the primary factors responsible for income differences were differences in tastes for market income versus leisure and differences in abilities working manual job tasks. Measured income dispersion under these conditions was strikingly similar to that in the United states and other market economies, indicating that these two factors alone are sufficient to generat…

  • An Experimental Investigation of Consumer Behavior in a Controlled Environment

Raymond C Battalio, Edwin B Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•1974•Citada por: 3

This article describes the general structure of controlled economic environments and reports the results of a series of experimentally-induced price changes on consumer behavior in one such environment. The experimental results demonstrate the suitability of controlled economic environments as laboratories for the experimental analysis of consumer behavior and add to our understanding of consumer behavior, particularly with respect to the continu…
