Destructuring a shield to rebuild the history
A painted wooden shield from the 16th century, commonly traced back to the famous Lepanto Battle (1571), was investigated by a multi‐analytical approach to identify its manufacturing process and shed light on its cultural provenance. The typology is coherent with both the Christian and Ottoman armies and does not allow for an attribution. Radiocarbon dated the shield to two time intervals (1470–1525, 1580–1625, at 68% level of probability), compa…
An integrated archaeological and anthropological approach to investigating human sacrifice among Etruscans
Radiocarbon Dating of Straw Fragments in the Plasters of St. Philip Church in Archaeological Site Hierapolis of Phrygia (Denizli, Turkey)
Absolute dating of plasters and mortars clearly represents a key information to study important structures and buildings that may have undergone a difficult story starting from their construction. This is for instance the case of the architectures in the archaeological site of Hierapolis (Denizli, Turkey). However, when discussing about the possibility to apply radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating, in this site the presence of different sources of contamin…
Direct Radiocarbon Dating of Charcoal-Based Ink in Papyri
When dating documents by radiocarbon ( 14 C), what we typically measure is the concentration of the support (e.g. paper, parchment, or papyrus). This can however lead to a possible misinterpretation of results because the support may be older than the writing itself. To minimize such a possible ambiguity, the ideal approach would be direct dating of the ink or color (if organic). Here we propose a feasibility study to date carbon-based black inks…
Radiocarbon Dating and the Protection of Cultural Heritage
The modern antiquities market uses radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating to screen for forged objects. Although this fact shows the potential and power of the method, the circumstances where it is applied can be questionable and call for our attention. Here we present an outline of a call to radiocarbon laboratories for due diligence and best practice approaches to the analysis of antique objects requested by non-research clients
Latest Holocene depositional history of the southern Venice Lagoon, Italy
Analyzing the signatures of landscape changes in the stratigraphic record is crucial to refine our knowledge of tidal landform dynamics and represents a first step toward the development of predictive morphodynamic models. The southern Venice Lagoon (Italy) is particularly suited to analyze modifications in the depositional environment and, consequently, in the sedimentary record because of the remarkable changes that occurred in the last centuri…
Characterization of the Chloroform-Based Pretreatment Method for 14 C Dating of Restored Wooden Samples
At INFN-LABEC (Florence, Italy), a new pretreatment for radiocarbon dating based on chloroform has been recently set up. This method aims to remove the synthetic resins used for artwork restoration, which otherwise could alter the original 14 C content. The present study characterizes the efficiency of the process when applied to wood. We have verified whether the effectiveness of the pretreatment depends on the number of extractions in chlorofor…
Middle paleolithic human deciduous incisor from Grotta del Cavallo, Italy
Up to now, the Rdi 1 Cavallo D represents the most recent Neandertal human remain in southern Italy related to a radiocarbon dated stratigraphy. Moreover, since deciduous teeth have been less investigated than the permanent ones, this contribution brings new data to increase our knowledge on the variability of the Neandertal deciduous dentition
Status of Sample Combustion and Graphitization Lines at INFN-Labec, Florence
Since installation of the new accelerator at INFN-LABEC in Florence in 2004, the workload has progressively increased in the radiocarbon dating laboratory, requiring a faster sample preparation throughput and greater versatility to allow for a larger variety of treated materials. The “standard” sample preparation line is based on an elemental analyzer (EA) for the combustion of the pretreated samples, and a vacuum line where the CO 2 is collected…
Palaeoenvironmental signals in ancient urban setting
A case study of an archaeological section in the pre-Islamic town of Sumhuram (third century bc–fifth century ad; Dhofar, S Oman) is presented. Sedimentological and palynological data have been integrated with the aim of finding signals of natural processes within an urban context. Two main types of deposits alternate in the section: anthropogenic (AD) and waterlain (WD). The presence of laminated sediments within the WD deposits, suggesting shor…
