  • The darker angels of our nature

    Open Access•R J Schulting, Teresa Fernández-Crespo et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 32

Direct physical evidence for violent interpersonal conflict is seen only sporadically in the archaeological record for prehistoric Britain. Human remains from Charterhouse Warren, south-west England, therefore present a unique opportunity for the study of mass violence in the Early Bronze Age. At least 37 men, women and children were killed and butchered, their disarticulated remains thrown into a 15m-deep natural shaft in what is, most plausibly…

  • Lead Isotope Analysis of Tooth Enamel from a Viking Age Mass Grave in Southern Britain and the Constraints it Places on the Origin of the Individuals

    Open Access•J A Evans, Jane Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018•Citada por: 2•Referências: 29

Lead analysis of tooth enamel from individuals recovered from a Viking Age burial pit in southern England provides further evidence for their childhood origins outside Britain. All except one of the men have very low Pb concentrations that exclude anthropogenic Pb exposure. Strontium and oxygen isotope compositions identify a core group of men who have Pb isotope compositions of 208 Pb/ 206 Pb = 2.065 ± 0.021 ( n = 20, 2SD) that, when compared wi…

  • An Unusual Erosive Arthropathy from Medieval England

    Open Access•May, S Mays et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Referências: 38

In palaeopathology, diagnosis of skeletal disease is classically made with reference to changes wrought by known diseases in modern or recent cases. This report presents a skeleton from medieval England which shows a form of erosive arthropathy. A more precise diagnosis is problematic because the alterations appear inconsistent with any of the principle forms of erosive arthropathy in current clinical classification. The distribution of lesions i…

  • Early life histories of the London poor using δ 1 3 C and δ 15 N stable isotope incremental dentine sampling

    Open Access•Rowena C Henderson, J A Lee‐thorp et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Citada por: 30•Referências: 39

High resolution incremental isotopic analysis of the dentine from early forming teeth, especially first molars (M1s), provides a means to assess the effects of poor childhood nutrition and healthcare on individuals in an assemblage where there are no infants to study. This approach is applied to an 18th and 19th century cemetery population associated with St Saviour's Almshouse burial ground in Southwark, London, to assess whether, or how, early …
