  • Linking French wh -in-situ and context

    Open Access•Aliza Glasbergen-Plas, Jenny Doetjes et al.•ARTICLE•Probus•2025

French wh -in-situ questions may be infelicitous when a quantifier or focus expression precedes the in-situ wh -phrase (‘intervention effects’). However, these intervention effects are absent in a certain type of context. This paper offers an account of French wh -in-situ questions that explains the role of context. We propose that French wh -phrases can be interpreted in-situ by means of a contextually bound choice function. We further hypothesi…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Grammatical Number

Patricia Cabredo Hofherr, Jenny Doetjes•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Grammatical…•2021

This volume offers an overview of current research on grammatical number in language. The chapters Part i of the handbook present foundational notions in the study of grammatical number covering the semantic analyses of plurality, the mass–count distinction, the relationship between number and quantity expressions and the mental representation of number and individuation. The core instance of grammatical number is marking for number distinctions …

  • The prosody of French wh -in-situ questions

    Open Access•Aliza Glasbergen-Plas, Stella Gryllia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

This study compares the prosodic properties of French wh -in-situ echo questions and string-identical information seeking questions in relation to focus. Thirty-six (12 $\times$ 3) wh -in-situ questions were embedded in dialogues designed to elicit (A) echo questions expressing auditory failure, (B) information seeking questions with broad focus or (C) information seeking questions with narrow focus on the wh -phrase, i.e. a focus structure simil…

  • Measure words and classifiers

    Open Access•Jenny Doetjes•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2017

This paper investigates the relation between measure words and mensural classifiers in numeral classifier languages. Based on data from three numeral classifier languages (Mandarin, Mokilese and Taba), the paper gives some preliminary evidence that measure words can be both classifier-like and noun-like in numeral classifier languages. This observation is discussed in the light of Rothstein's (2009, 2011) distinction between measuring and countin…

  • The Count/Mass Distinction in Grammar and Cognition

    Jenny Doetjes•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Linguistics•2016•Citada por: 7•Referências: 9

The count/mass distinction is a domain of human language that is strongly related to human cognition. This review starts with an overview of recent research on individuation in relation to core knowledge systems (in particular the systems of object representation, agent representation, and number representation), followed by a brief overview of the role these representations play in the acquisition of count meaning. I then discuss linguistic aspe…
