Experimental evidence from extraction for the D-shell analysis of clausal prolepsis
In clausal prolepsis constructions, a CP is ‘doubled’ by a pronoun in argument position (‘ I love it that there are handouts ’). We bring new experimental evidence to bear on long-standing questions about the structure of clausal prolepsis (Postal and Pullum 1988; Rothstein 1995). In three judgment studies, we show that clausal prolepsis constructions exhibit stronger island effects than baseline factive complements. We argue that this follows on…
Second chances in antecedent retrieval
A body of psycholinguistic research shows that structural constraints play a large role in guiding anaphora resolution in the early moments of processing (Nicol and Swinney 1989; Harris et al. 2000; Sturt 2003; Kazanina et al. 2007; Xiang et al. 2009; Chow et al. 2014). Omaki (2010) and Omaki et al. (2019) report on an interesting case where reflexives in wh -predicate fronting constructions launch a search that is not structurally guided. We fur…
Processing bound-variable singular they
The pronouns they/them/their are readily available with a singular interpretation as bound variables (Balhorn 2004, Bjorkman 2017). Referential interpretations are possible, but subject to pragmatic considerations and changes in progress (Bjorkman 2017, Conrod 2019, Konnelly and Cowper 2020). In a series of experiments, we tested differences between bound and referential singular they in acceptability and incremental processing, asking whether bo…
Singular they in context
There is a growing experimental and theoretical literature on singular they, much of it focusing on the nature of the antecedents it takes (Foertsch & Gernsbacher 1997; Bjorkman 2017; Doherty & Conklin 2017; Prasad 2017; Ackerman et al. 2018; Ackerman 2018a; Ackerman 2018b; Conrod 2018; Ackerman 2019; Camilliere et al. 2019; Conrod 2019; Konnelly & Cowper 2020). We conducted two experiments which, in contrast to earlier studies, manipulated wheth…
The syntax of Korean VP anaphora
Attitudinal and modal objects
Null Objects in Korean
Null object (NO) constructions in Korean and Japanese have received different accounts: as (a) argument ellipsis ( Oku 1998 , S. Kim 1999 , Saito 2007 , Sakamoto 2015 ), (b) VP-ellipsis after verb raising ( Otani and Whitman 1991 , Funakoshi 2016 ), or (c) instances of base-generated pro ( Park 1997 , Hoji 1998 , 2003 ). We report results from two experiments supporting the argument ellipsis analysis for Korean. Experiment 1 builds on K.-M. Kim a…
Adverbs in VP ellipsis
This paper presents a case study of verb phrase ellipses with adverbially modified antecedents. It is shown experimentally that there is a preference for resolving ellipses in certain embedded clauses with unmodified VPs. The effect is hypothesized to reflect a general requirement to minimize the complexity of accommodated content. Four experiments support this hypothesis over plausible candidate hypotheses, including syntactic approaches to the …
C-command vs. scope
While there are very clearly some structural constraints on pronoun interpretation, debate remains as to their extent and proper formulation (Bruening 2014). Since Reinhart 1976 it has commonly been reported that bound-variable pronouns are subject to a c-command requirement. This claim is not universally agreed upon and has recently been challenged by Barker (2012), who argues that bound pronouns must merely fall within the semantic scope of a b…
Focus on Cataphora
Since Chomsky 1976 , it has been claimed that focus on a referring expression blocks coreference in a cataphoric dependency (* His i mother loves JOHN i vs. His i mother LOVES John i ). In three auditory experiments and a written questionnaire, we show that this fact does not hold when a referent is unambiguously established in the discourse (cf. Williams 1997 , Bianchi 2009 ) but does hold otherwise, validating suggestions in Rochemont 1978 , Ho…
The Accusative Plus Infinitive Construction in English
This chapter focuses on the English accusative plus infinitive (A + I) construction, which in the generative literature is known as the raising to object construction and the exceptional case‐marking construction. The A + I construction is an example par excellence of a syntax–semantics mismatch and so has played a central role in our understanding of grammatical relations, semantic relations, and the ways in which syntax coordinates both of thes…
CPs
Finite clausal arguments differ from other arguments-and other CPs-in two fundamental ways: (a) they do not move leftward ( Koster 1978 , Alrenga 2005 , Takahashi 2010 , Moulton 2013 ) and (b) they may combine with nouns that do not accept arguments ( Stowell 1981 , Grimshaw 1990 ). I argue that finite clausal arguments are predicates of propositional content (type 〈e,〈s,t〉〉), following proposals in Kratzer 2006 , Moulton 2009 . They combine with…
Raising from the Dead
There’s a family of proposals now suggesting that the quantificational force for noun phrases is associated with heads situated higher in the extended projection of the clause (Beghelli and Stowell 1997, Szabolcsi 1997, Hallman 2000, Sportiche 2005). While these proposals differ in their implementation,1 all converge on the expectation that the absence of such projections limits the scope options for quantified nouns. Sportiche (2005) points out …
Not Moving Clauses
Novel reconstruction data is introduced which argues that clauses do not move leftward, thus contributing to a long-standing debate about sentential subjects and topics (Koster 1978, Alrenga 2005). Although fronted clauses appear to reconstruct for variable-binding purposes, I offer several arguments that these bound-variable interpretations are only apparent. First, left-dislocated CPs do not exhibit the kinds of reconstruction interactions that…
