Millstone of the Beginning of the Early Iron Age
Among the finds discovered during the study of the elite burial mound no. 7 of the Sargat culture at the Tartas-2 site, there is an upper part of the millstone. This is the first time such an artifact has been found on a closed complex in the Baraba forest-steppe. The tool dates back to the 7th century BC. The paper presents the results of its experimental and traceological study, as well as the analysis of the remaining residues of processed pro…
Cultic Complex of the Bronze Age in the Northern Baraba Region
The article presents new evidence of the Bronze Age, which was obtained from the excavations of a cultic complex of the Early–Advanced Bronze Age (early to mid third millennium BC) at the Karier Tai-1 settlement in the Baraba forest-steppe in the field season of 2025. The complex consisted of a sub-rectangular area surrounded by two concentric horseshoe-shaped ditches, three frame-andpost structures with shallow pits, and a series of pits for eve…
Birds and Children
This article analyzes various kinds of ornithological evidence discovered in children’s burials in the Baraba forest-steppe (Tartas-1 and Sopka-2 burial grounds, and Korchugan and Ust-Tartas burial mounds). Grave goods made of bird bones included needles, tubular beads, and piercing tools. In some cases the choice of material for producing these items could have been deliberate. In the Late Bronze Age, a significant number of children’s burials a…
Study of the Bronze Age Settlement in the Tai Locality (Ust-Tartas-5 Site as a Part of the Karier Tai-1 Complex)
In 2019, a team of scholars did a geophysical monitoring of a part of the left bank of the Tai locality in Novosibirsk Region. During this process, some anomalies which could indicate the presence of ancient structures were identified at the Karier Tai-1 archaeological site. One of them was explored in the 2025 field season. A large trapezoidal dark grey spot was discovered in the northern part of section 5. A humus-filled black spot of sub-recta…
Fish Storing Pits as a Stable Tradition of Paleoeconomics among the Ancient Cultures of the Tai Area
The Tai locality in Vengerovo District of Novosibirsk Region has always attracted humans. In 1973, a two-meter-deep pit which contained fish bones and scales, bones of mammoth and rhinoceros, stone tools, and bison skull was discovered on its terrace. The object was interpreted as a Pleistocene pit, but its functional purpose remained unclear. In recent decades traces of early settlements and series of pits intended for fermenting fish have been …
Image of Wild Boar as Decoration Image in Ancient Nomads Rielm of Western Siberia
In the steppe and forest-steppe regions of Western Siberia, the wild boar image is one of the dominant animal motifs in ScythianSiberian art. The image was used in the decorations of weapons, funerary equipment, clothing, and harnesses; it was likely perceived as a certain symbol by the Early Iron Age nomadic peoples. In the religious and mythological traditions of European cultures, the boar was regarded as both a hoofed animal and a predator. T…
Iron Ore from Mound No. 51 of the Ust-Tartas Burial Ground. Sargat Culture
Purpose. The article presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of iron ore fragments found during the explorations of mound no. 51 of the Ust-Tartas site (Vengerovsky distric, Novosibirsk region). The fragments presented shapeless rock debris with ferruginous oxides and a specific. Two fragments turned out to be slag. Three fragments come from burial no. 17 while others were found in the mound fill and the arable layer, obviously moved fro…
Cultic Complexes of the Urals and Western Siberia
This article discusses the history of research into unusual type of archaeological objects - cultic places, altars, and sanctuaries, located in the Urals and Western Siberia, including the time when the sites of warship in these regions were mentioned for the first time and when scholars’ interest in sacred objects of the past emerged. The stages in expanding the corpus of sources, interpreting the functional purpose of sacred objects, and identi…
Storage Pit for Fish Fermentation at the Tartas-1 Site, the Baraba Neolithic Culture
The article presents the results obtained by the Western Siberian Team of the Northern Asian Integrated Expedition in 2021 during the field works at the Tartas-1 site in Novosibirsk Region. Another object of the Early Neolithic was discovered on the edge of the second terrace above the floodplain at the Tartas-1 site. Complexes of similar pits and individual pits were investigated earlier, in 2015-2016. Settlement structures and system of utility…
Studies of the Staryi Tartas-1 Multilayer Settlement (Vengerovsky District of Novosibirsk Region)
This article presents the evidence obtained from traditional collecting surface materials at the Staryi Tartas-1 site located on the floodplain terrace on the left bank of the Om River opposite the village of the same name in Vengerovsky District of Novosibirsk Region. The works of 2021 enrich our knowledge about the site and elucidate the individual features of material culture among its inhabitants. A fundamentally new pottery form - a bowl - h…

Late Bronze Age Smelting and Processing Furnaces of the Eastern Variant of the Pakhomovskaya Culture in the Baraba Forest-Steppe
We describe smelting furnaces found in southwestern Siberia, at the Tartas-1 ritual site, representing the eastern variant of the Pakhomovskaya culture. This is so far the only known site where the ritual complex, which includes post holes, and utility and ritual pits, adjoins a special manufacturing area with furnaces for smelting copper ore and processing bronze. The pits, differing in form, depth, and size, belonged to a structure. Furnaces ar…

Periodization of bronze age cultures in the ob–irtysh forest-steppe
The paper presents archaeological materials recovered from the Tartas-1 burial ground in 2010. The limited area of Tartas-1 contains burials, the stratigraphic position of which makes it possible to establish a periodization of Early and Middle Bronze Age cultures in the Baraba forest-steppe. The paper describes burials attributed to the Ust-Tartas, Odino, Krotovo, and Late Krotovo cultures
