Immigrants’ Gendered Remittance‐Sending Patterns and Purposes
Research on immigrant remittances and gender is dominated by qualitative studies focusing on specific groups of immigrants; meanwhile, quantitative analysis is scarce due to data limitations. This article examines relationships between federal government funding and reported spending by charities on what the Canada Revenue Agency defined as “political activities” over the period 2003–2017. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many charities in Canada see dependence on government funding by other charities as a factor that limits policy engagement. This article captures key findings from a larger research project looking at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the remittance sending and receiving behaviours of im/migrants living in Newfoundland and Labrador. For this study, I interviewed 30 im/migrants from lower and middle-income countries about their pandemic experience. During the past two decades, international development non-government organizations (INGOs) have proliferated in the global North.
