What does the general public want to know about language?
This study investigates how nonexperts conceptualize linguistics and what they most want to know about language. We recruited 812 English-speaking participants from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom via Prolific to complete four open-ended surveys ( N = 406 on perceived professional foci; N = 406 on desired research topics). All responses were segmented into 2,684 statements and analyzed with unsupervised natural language processi…

Moral Injury and Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder in War
This study examines the intergenerational transfer of the genocidal trauma of the Holodomor (1932-33) and explores how marital status moderates its impact on moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Moral injury, distinct from PTSD, arises from the violation of moral beliefs, leading to emotional distress characterised by guilt, shame, anger, disgust and a sense of betrayal. While pr…
The impact of formal education on literacy and numeracy skills in Chilean adults
Chile and other Latin American countries consistently demonstrate the lowest scores in the international surveys of foundational information-processing skills. This paper examines the effect of formal education on the literacy and numeracy performance of Chilean adults and compares this effect with that observed in Latin American countries with similar information-processing skills. Using data from the Programme for the International Assessment o…
How does language distance affect reading fluency and comprehension in English as second language
Acquisition of reading skill in a second language (L2) requires development and coordinated use of multiple component skills. This acquisition is less effortful the more similar the first language (L1) of the L2 learner is to that L2. While ways to quantify the L1–L2 distance are well defined in the current literature, the theoretical status of this distance in models of L2 reading acquisition is under-specified. This paper tests whether the L1–L…
New data on text reading in English as a second language
This paper reports an expansion of the English as a second language (L2) component of the Multilingual Eye Movement Corpus (MECO L2), an international database of eye movements during text reading. While the previous Wave 1 of the MECO project (Kuperman et al., 2023) contained English as a L2 reading data from readers with 12 different first language (L1) backgrounds, the newly collected dataset adds eye-tracking data on English text reading from…
Intersample variance of second-language readers should not be overlooked
Much of the literature on first (L1) second language (L2) reading agrees that there are noticeable behavioral differences between L1 and L2 readers of a given language, as well as between L2 speakers with different L1 backgrounds (Finnish vs German readers of English). Yet, this literature often overlooks potential variability between multiple samples of speakers of the same L1. This study examines this intersample variance using reading data fro…
Recovery from university grade inflation after the Covid-19 pandemic varies by faculty
Recovery from university grade inflation after the COVID-19 pandemic varies by faculty Higher education institutions worldwide report a drastic increase in grades during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since it was not paralleled by an increase in student achievements, the consensus is that the pandemic came with grade inflation, which exceeded the systematic multiannual trends of grade inflation. The present paper adds two novel aspects to this body of r…
Learning Concrete and Abstract Novel Words in Emotional Contexts
This study investigates the role of emotional linguistic input in learning novel words with abstract and concrete denotations. It is widely accepted that concrete words are processed more easily than abstract ones. Several theories of vocabulary acquisition additionally propose a critical role of sensorimotor and emotional information during novel word learning. In this study, proficient adult speakers of English read novel words denoting concret…
Individual differences in word skipping during reading in English as L2
The Multilingual Eye-movement Corpus (MECO; Siegelman et al., 2022) contains data from unbalanced bilinguals reading in their first language (L1) for a variety of languages and in English as their second language (L2). We analyzed word skipping in L2 on the basis of five predictors consisting of the frequency and length of the word in L2 and three measures of individual differences. Besides the L2 proficiency of the participant, two novel measure…

Rethinking First Language-Second Language Similarities and Differences in English Proficiency
This article presents the ENglish Reading Online (ENRO) project that offers data on English reading and listening comprehension from 7,338 university-level advanced learners and native speakers of English representing 19 countries. The database also includes estimates of reading rate and seven component skills of English, including vocabulary, spelling, and grammar, as well as rich demographic and language background data. We first demonstrate hi…
Text reading in English as a second language
Research into second language (L2) reading is an exponentially growing field. Yet, it still has a relatively short supply of comparable, ecologically valid data from readers representing a variety of first languages (L1). This article addresses this need by presenting a new data resource called MECO L2 (Multilingual Eye Movements Corpus), a rich behavioral eye-tracking record of text reading in English as an L2 among 543 university student speake…

A bird's eye view of civic engagement and its facets
Civic engagement is a multi-faceted concept that is integral to the proper functioning of a democratic society. The present study investigates the effect that a wide range of individual-level demographic, educational, cognitive, and health-related predictors have on civic engagement and its facets, providing an overview of 34 countries around the world. The use of canonical correlation analysis allows us to quantify both the shared and unique con…

Linguist is as linguist does
This study attempts to answer a perennial question asked of and by every student of linguistics: ‘What can you do with this degree?’. We address the question through an in-depth analysis of administrative and tax data from Statistics Canada (2009–2018). Specifically, this article (i) maps out educational and employment pathways of linguistics graduates in Canada, (ii) compares their earnings to graduates from other ‘competitor’ programs that futu…
Quantifying the Difference in Reading Fluency Between L1 and L2 Readers of English
This study is a comparative examination of reading behavior of first-language (L1) Canadian and second-language (L2) Finnish and German readers of English. We measured eye-movement patterns during reading the same set of English sentences and administered tests of English vocabulary, spelling, and exposure to print. The core of our study is a novel method of statistical prediction used to generate hypothetical Finnish and German participants with…
Effects of year of post‐secondary study on reading skills for L1 and L2 speakers of English
Background Previous studies show that students improve communication skills throughout post‐secondary study proportionately to first‐year ability, yet important questions remain. How does post‐secondary affect the development of reading comprehension and related skills? How does this development vary between L1 and L2 speakers, and how much change occurs each year? Methods We administered a cross‐sectional battery of tests of reading proficiency …
Effects of Linguistic Distance on Cognitive Skills, Health, and Social Outcomes in Canadian Immigrants
Learning languages is more difficult if they are more distant (dissimilar) from the person's first language. For immigrants, a greater distance between their L1 and official languages of their host country impedes integration. Using microdata from the PIAAC survey in 2012, we quantified the cognitive, and socio-economic impact of linguistic distance on a sample of 2,018 immigrants to Canada representing 12 diverse languages. Speakers of languages…

The textual features of fiction that appeal to readers
In two studies we assessed whether simple surface-level textual features of fictional works predict their appeal to readers. Specifically, we focused on the potential role of emotional valence and arousal, the presence of affective themes (i.e., sex, religion, and death), and word concreteness and frequency. In Study 1, we compiled a corpus of 1,471 short stories posted to a creative writing website and along with ratings of these stories by read…
How are words felt in a second language
The topic of non-native language processing has been of steady interest in past decades. Yet, conclusions about the emotional responses in L2 have been highly variable. We conducted a large-scale rating study to explicitly measure how non-native readers of English respond to the valence and arousal of 2,628 English words. We investigated how the effect of a rater's L2 proficiency, length of time in Canada, and the semantic category of the word af…

Semiotic perspective of psychiatric diagnosis
Psychiatric diagnostics can be meaningfully approached from the viewpoint of such concepts as normality of presented behavioral symptoms and signs, sincerity of the representation modality, and pathology of the patient’s internal state. The concepts form the basis for epistemological propositions that allow for a structured differential description of several psychiatric phenomena — such as health, mental illness, clinical deception, Munchausen s…

Narratives of psychiatric malingering in works of fiction
This paper argues that the representation of psychiatric malingering in literary and cinematographic narratives informs societal stereotypes, and thus influences the clinical phenomenology of malingering. The study aims to identify sociocultural models of malingering in contemporary Western society based on the narrative analysis of about 60 fictional and non-fiction texts. Two behavioural patterns derived from the Foucauldian categories folly an…

Emotion and language
Emotion influences most aspects of cognition and behavior, but emotional factors are conspicuously absent from current models of word recognition. The influence of emotion on word recognition has mostly been reported in prior studies on the automatic vigilance for negative stimuli, but the precise nature of this relationship is unclear. Various models of automatic vigilance have claimed that the effect of valence on response times is categorical,…
