National Needs of Family Planning Among US Men Aged 15 to 44 Years
Objectives. To estimate national need for family planning services among men in the United States according to background characteristics, access to care, receipt of services, and contraception use. Methods. We used weighted data from the 2006–2010 National Survey of Family Growth to estimate the percentage of men aged 15 to 44 years (n = 10 395) in need of family planning, based on sexual behavior, fecundity, and not trying to get pregnant with …

Effectiveness of a Brief Curriculum to Promote Condom and Health Care Use Among Out‐of‐School Young Adult Males
Context Out‐of‐school black males aged 15–24 have higher levels of sexual risk‐taking than in‐school black males of the same age. However, few sexual risk reduction curricula are focused on out‐of‐school male youth . Methods A sexual and reproductive health intervention conducted at a Baltimore youth employment and training program in 2008–2010 was evaluated in a study involving 197 youth aged 16–24 from a predominantly black population. Ninety‐e…
Union Status and Sexual Risk Behavior Among Men in Their 30s
Men in their 30s, especially those who are not married, engage in risky sexual behaviors. Further studies are needed to assess what contributes to behavioral differences by union status and what types of services might help men in this age-group reduce their risk
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Sexual Risk Behaviors And STDs During Young Men’s Transition to Adulthood
Race and ethnicity continue to differentiate young black and Latino men from their white peers in terms of STDs. Prevention programs that target different racial and ethnic subgroups of adolescent men and address both individual- and contextual-level factors are needed to curb STD incidence
Pathways of Early Fatherhood, Marriage, and Employment
In the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), young fathers include heterogeneous subgroups with varying early life pathways in terms of fatherhood timing, the timing of first marriage, and holding full-time employment. Using latent class growth analysis with 10 observations between ages 18 and 37, we derived five latent classes with median ages of first fatherhood below the cohort median (26.4), constituting distinct early fatherho…
Associations of Family and Peer Experiences with Masculinity Attitude Trajectories at the Individual and Group Level in Adolescent and Young Adult Males
Data were drawn from 845 males in the National Survey of Adolescent Males who were initially aged 15-17, and followed-up 2.5 and 4.5 years later, to their early twenties. Mixed-effects regression models (MRM) and semiparametric trajectory analyses (STA) modeled patterns of change in masculinity attitudes at the individual and group levels, guided by gender intensification theory and cognitive-developmental theory. Overall, men's masculinity attit…
Women's Perspectives on Family Planning Service Quality
Future surveys of family planning service quality should include measures of the factors that women value in such care, and efforts to improve providers' communication and counseling skills should emphasize the personalization of services and respect for clients' autonomy
Changes in Sexual Risk Behavior as Young Men Transition to Adulthood
The prominence of low-risk behaviors over time suggests that most young men avoid sexual risk-taking. Effective strategies to reduce HIV and STD risk in young men must simultaneously address multiple dimensions of sexual behavior
The Quality of Family Planning Services in the United States
CONTEXT: Family planning services are frequently used and important services for American women, yet little is known about their quality. Service quality has important implications for women’s reproductive health. If women do not receive adequate information and tools, and learn appropriate skills, from their providers, they may be hampered in their efforts to control their fertility. METHODS: A variety of strategies, including database, journal …

Adolescent Males' Combined Use of Condoms with Partners' Use of Female Contraceptive Methods
Changes in sexual behavior and condom use among teenaged males
OBJECTIVES: This study examines shifts in sexual experience and condom use among US teenaged males. METHODS: Results from the 1988 and 1995 National Surveys of Adolescent Males were compared. RESULTS: The proportion of never-married 15- to 19-year-old males who had had sex with a female declined from 60% to 55% (P = .06). The share of those sexually active using a condom at last intercourse rose from 57% to 67% (P

The Dynamics of Young Men's Condom Use During and Across Relationships
According to data from the 1991 National Survey of Adolescent Males, condom use is likely to be highest at the beginning of relationships and to decline as the relationship continues. The proportion of sexually active men aged 17-22 who used a condom with their most recent partner declined from 53% the first time they had intercourse with that partner to 44% at the most recent episode. Condom use also decreases with age; 59% of 17-18-year-olds us…

Satisfaction with Child Care
Approximately 11% of U.S. children have mothers on Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). In 1988 this program was reformed to require mothers with children over the age of 2 years to participate in employment programs, and child care subsidies were guaranteed. This paper examines AFDC mothers' perspectives on their child care in 1983–1984, before welfare reform, to explore the characteristics of care that mothers are likely to seek. Mot…
Adolescent Males' Condom Use
The relationship between males perceived cost benefits and consistency of condom use in 4 areas preventing pregnancy avoiding AIDS partner expectations and embarrassment and reduction of pleasure--is examined. The stratified nationally representative sample of 1880 never-married males 15-19 years provided the data (the National Survey of Adolescent Males). There was overrepresentation of black and Hispanic men. Measures utilized and defined are a…
Child-Care Use Among Welfare Mothers
The current welfare policy environment places considerable emphasis on employment as a means for reducing welfare dependency. Policy provisions that subsidize child-care use are aimed at encouraging work, exit from welfare, and sustained independence from public support. Yet there has been very little research on the child-care usage patterns of welfare mothers, particularly with respect to factors associated with the persistence of such patterns…
Contraceptive Attitudes and Intention to Use Condoms in Sexually Experienced and Inexperienced Adolescent Males
In the 1988 National Survey of Adolescent Males, about three fifths of sexually experienced and inexperienced adolescent males intending to have sex in the next year reported there is an 'almost certain chance' they will use a condom with a hypothetical future partner. Sexually experienced males report lower perceived costs for condom use related to embarrassment (assessed in a subjective expected utility format) than do inexperienced males. Howe…
