  • Early warning signals of changing resilience in the biogeochemistry and biology of a northern hardwood forest

    Open Access•Alexandra R Contosta, John J Battles et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Resilience is the ability of ecosystems to maintain function while experiencing perturbation. Globally, forests are experiencing disturbances of unprecedented quantity, type, and magnitude that may diminish resilience. Early warning signals are statistical properties of data whose increase over time may provide insights into decreasing resilience, but there have been few applications to forests. We quantified four early warning signals (standard …

  • Air pollution success stories in the United States

    Open Access•Timothy J Sullivan, Charles T Driscoll et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2018•Citada por: 2

We summarize past examples of the use of science to document the effectiveness of policy in air quality management. Our goal is to inform public discourse amidst attempts to negate the relevance and value of scientific data and fact-based analysis in favor of partisan opinion and ideology. Although air quality is fundamental to environmental and human health, air pollution has degraded natural systems and reduced economic and cultural benefits an…

  • Trends in stream nitrogen concentrations for forested reference catchments across the USA

Open Access•Alba Argerich, Sherri L Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

To examine whether stream nitrogen concentrations in forested reference catchments have changed over time and if patterns were consistent across the USA, we synthesized up to 44 yr of data collected from 22 catchments at seven USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests. Trends in stream nitrogen presented high spatial variability both among catchments at a site and among sites across the USA. We found both increasing and decreasing trends in monthl…

  • Integrating Science and Society through Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research

    Christopher B Anderson, Gene E Likens et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Ethics•2008•Citada por: 1

Long-term ecological research (LTER), addressing problems that encompass decadal or longer time frames, began as a formal term and program in the United States in 1980.While longterm ecological studies and observation began as early as the 1400s and 1800s in Asia and Europe, respectively, the long-term approach was not formalized until the establishment of the U.S. long-term ecological research programs. These programs permitted ecosystem-level ex…
