New Light on the Prophet Dance Controversy
A re-examination of ethnographic and documentary materials combined with a look at recent archaeological data suggest that the Prophet Dance among Indians of the Plateau and Northwest Coast was inspired by indirect, protohistoric influences stemming from Euroamericans. This is contrary to the view that the Prophet Dance was a purely aboriginal innovation
