Re-imagining Moralities and Masculinities in the Context of Male Circumcision and Marriage in South-Western Kenya Communities
Male circumcision and marriage are significant cultural practices that mark a critical stage in a person’s life in many African societies. Many rites of passage that exist, circumcision and marriage are intertwined. Marriage and circumcision like other cultural themes have attracted wide scholarship of diverse depths. Such studies have underlined, among others, the nature, forms, types and even the place of the two initiation rites in society. Wh…
How Officialising Private Land Ownership Contributed to Land-grabbing in Kenya
The vernacular meaning of land-grabbing in Kenya stresses the role played by the State in land thefts, reminding us that, historically, state power was built up through control over land. Accusations of land grabbing also convey territorial representations of ethnic and national belonging, anchoring the legitimacy of land ownership. We focus on the actors and scales involved in officialising private land ownership to highlight institutionally-roo…
‘The Disease of the Rich’
This article analyses the political construction in Kenya of the confusion between health prevention and law enforcement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kenya’s security approach to the management of the COVID-19 situation went along with extortion mechanisms—the numerous exceptions to containment indeed made it possible to extract rent. The fear of the virus initially legitimised coercive measures which have now declined; but deviant practice link…
Entwined values
In Buganda, the monetary value of land and other values associated with land are intricately woven together. We shed light on entwined values of land from family and clan to kingdom and national levels by looking at the case of a historical site located in the periphery of Kampala. We document the general trend of land fragmentation, and the growth of an urban land market. Then we turn to land inheritance, individual effort to claim land and the …
Agricultural frontier, land tenure changes and conflicts along the Gucha-Trans Mara boundary in Kenya
Administrative limits do not ordinarily constitute internal boundaries, yet this is the case of the Gucha and Trans Mara boundary between the current counties of Kisii and Narok Countries in south-western Kenya. This boundary which served as a tool for political and administrative control has had a lasting impact on land settlement. Kenya’s territorial heritage proved resilient. It confined the Gusii and the Maasai on either side of the boundary …
Land titling in Uganda crowds out local farmers
A boom in land titling has hit the outskirts of Kampala in Uganda, with the development of housing projects and new types of investments in the farm sector. Most of the new title-holders are not the tenants who used to be at the basis of the local agricultural system despite legislation officially intended to protect them. Tenant families are progressively losing their rights and trapped with insufficient land for farming. Most are today involved…
Creating dependency
President Museveni's re-election in February 2011 demonstrated once more the skills of the Ugandan leader to remain in control ever since he took over power in 1986 heading a guerrilla movement. Some of the campaign themes dealt with land and administration, others with security and the role of the armed forces in bringing back peace to the country. Museveni's populist stance in favour of squatters, in places where user rights are threatened by t…
Key Issues in Disentangling the Kenyan Crisis
In Kenya, as elsewhere, it is not unusual to construe in xenophobic terms the injustices that have been experienced. Grievances have been translated into a language of indigenous and territorial claims to land. Not going along with this rhetoric enables us to take the measure of existing injustices
Les frontières de la violence au Kenya
During the recent post electoral crisis in Kenya, the turn of the protest took many by surprise. We were reminded that the making of ethnicity is on ongoing process in which violence plays a part. New boundaries have appeared, re-enacting old divisions and creating new rifts. Once the mark of administration, internal boundaries now threaten the existence of the State
