Significance of Brooding to the Energy Demands of Alaskan Rock Ptarmigan Chicks
Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) chicks are brooded periodically during the first few days of life; longer in cold and rainy weather. Computed minimum foraging time in adverse weather conditions is 96 minutes/24 hours. Crop analysis and calorimetry of the 6 major food items show that a full crop may contain up to 0.47 kcals. Energy requirements were calculated for both an 18-gram chick and a 30-gram chick. The 18-gram chick required between 34 and …
Foods Eaten by Tree Sparrows in Relation to Availability During Summer in Northern Manitoba
The amount of animal matter in the stomach contents of tree sparrows (Spizella arborea) collected at Churchill, Manitoba, increased from June until the middle of July but quickly dropped off in August. Chief food items were seeds of 6 species of Carex; seeds, flowers and fruits of Empetrum and Vaccinium; adult Diptera and Araneida; and larvae of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera. From available foods tree sparrows selected several species of Carex and i…
Geographic Variation in Body Size and Weight of Willow Ptarmigan
Reports results of multiple range test comparisons of wing, tail and net body weight measurements of 2600 specimens collected in Alaska and adjacent Yukon Territory. Populations from different geographic areas showed statistically significant differences but uniformity within recognizable subspecies. Lagopus lagopus alascensis has the largest range in Alaska and occurs at least to Old Crow in the Yukon. L.l.albus occurs from central Yukon Territo…
Migration of Willow Ptarmigan in Arctic Alaska
Studies the movements of Lagopus lagopus through the narrow valley of Anaktuvuk Pass in the Brooks Range, recorded since 1948. Migration from the breeding grounds in the Colville and other river valleys in the Arctic Slope begins in late Sept; movement northward from as far south as the Koyukuk River occurs in mid Jan-early Feb and again in early Apr. In winter adult males predominate in the northern range, juvenile males in the Pass, and females…
