Home is an icebreaker-at least for a few of us frozen into the Arctic Ocean aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Des Groseilliers. We are here as an ancillary part of SHEBA (Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean), the largest project that the United States National Science Foundation has funded in the Arctic to date. The Shelter Characteristics of Traditional-styled Inuit Snow Houses
The shelter value of snow iglus at Resolute (74 41 N, 94 54 W) in the Canadian High Arctic was assessed. After a survey of snow conditions, construction sites were chosen and two iglus were built and furnished in a traditional way. A large iglu (4.1 m diameter) contained 72 blocks averaging 23.6 kg and had a surface area-to-volume ratio of 2.21:1. Occurrence of Arctic Cod ( Boreogadus Saida ) Schools and Their Vulnerability to Predation in the Canadian High Arctic
We document the occurrence of large schools of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) in the Barrow Strait region of the eastern Canadian Arctic during the open water season. Schools were most frequently observed near shore, often in depressions inside bays. Schools ranged up to 130 000 sq m surface area and contained on the order of 4 x 10**8 fish, weighing 12 000 tonnes. Timothy Idlout (1916-92)
On 28 November 1992, at age 77, Timothy Idlout died at home in Resolute, Northwest Territories. Born in the spring of 1916 near Pond Inlet, as a young man he traveled extensively in the area of Baffin and Somerset islands. He lost his first wife and six children to disease in the early 1940s. In 1946 he married Naomi Nangat, who was born near Repulse Bay and grew up in the Igloolik area. The couple lived in the Fort Ross/Creswell Bay/Aston Bay ar…

We summarize observations of foraging northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) in the Barrow Strait-Lancaster Sound region of the Northwest Territories from June to September 1984-90 and in Admiralty Inlet, N.W.T., in July 1989. In each year, fulmars scavenged hunter-killed marine mammal remains in the vicinity of Resolute Bay. Large feeding flocks, aggregated primarily along tide lines and at upwelling sites, exploited primarily calanoid copepods b…
Energy Flow through the Marine Ecosystem of the Lancaster Sound Region, Arctic Canada
This paper synthesizes the trophic dynamics of a Canadian arctic marine ecosystem in so far as it is known, using new data on primary production, zooplankton, the bivalve Mya truncata, and arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), as well as literature values for marine mammals and seabirds. The 98,000 sq km region has a high rate of primary production relative to other parts of arctic Canada. About 60 g C/sq. m are fixed annually, of which approximately 90…
Does the Clam Mya truncata Regenerate Its Siphon after Predation by Walrus? An Experimental Approach
Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) prey extensively on the bivalve Mya truncata, removing the siphons. We performed a simple experiment whereby the siphons from 27 M. truncata were removed, 33 controls were left intact, and the clams left on the sea bottom for a year. All the damaged Mya died; all but 2 controls lived. We conclude that M. truncata whose siphons have been grazed by walrus die, leaving over half the clam to predators or scavengers
