  • The Southeast Asian Bronze Age Fringe? Technological, Elemental and Lead Isotopic Data From Nong Nor and Koh Ta Méas

Open Access•T O Pryce, Mélissa Cadet et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

Mainland Southeast Asian metal exchange networks during the regional Bronze Age (c. 1200–500 bc ) are increasingly well‐documented and understood in their complexity and relations to southern China. However, significant gaps remain due to the scarcity of excavated sites of this period with metallurgical assemblages, as well as most of the previously studied sites being in irregularly distributed clusters. The Bronze Age cemeteries of Nong Nor and…

  • The prehistoric peopling of Southeast Asia

Open Access•Hugh McColl, Fernando Racimo et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Ancient migrations in Southeast Asia The past movements and peopling of Southeast Asia have been poorly represented in ancient DNA studies (see the Perspective by Bellwood). Lipson et al. generated sequences from people inhabiting Southeast Asia from about 1700 to 4100 years ago. Screening of more than a hundred individuals from five sites yielded ancient DNA from 18 individuals. Comparisons with present-day populations suggest two waves of mixin…

  • Fourteenth to Sixteenth Centuries AD

Roland Fletcher, Brendan M Buckley et al.•BOOK•Megadrought and Collapse•2017

Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire in Southeast Asia, was the most extensive low-density agrarian-based urban complex in the world. The demise of this great city between the late 13th and the start of the 17th centuries AD has been a topic of ongoing debate, with explanations that range from the burden of excessive construction work to disease, geo-political change, and the development of new trade routes. In the 1970s Bernard-Phillipe Grosl…

  • Uncovering archaeological landscapes at Angkor using lidar

Open Access•Damian Evans, Damian H Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2013

Previous archaeological mapping work on the successive medieval capitals of the Khmer Empire located at Angkor, in northwest Cambodia (∼9th to 15th centuries in the Common Era, C.E.), has identified it as the largest settlement complex of the preindustrial world, and yet crucial areas have remained unmapped, in particular the ceremonial centers and their surroundings, where dense forest obscures the traces of the civilization that typically remai…

Open Access•Roland Fletcher, Dan Penny et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2008•Citada por: 15•Referências: 8

Meticulous survey of the banks, channels and reservoirs at Angkor shows them to have been part of a large scale water management network instigated in the ninth century AD. Water collected from the hills was stored and could have been distributed for a wide variety of purposes including flood control, agriculture and ritual while a system of overflows and bypasses carried surplus water away to the lake, the Tonle Sap, to the south. The network ha…

  • A comprehensive archaeological map of the world's largest preindustrial settlement complex at Angkor, Cambodia

Open Access•Damian Evans, Christophe Pottier et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2007

The great medieval settlement of Angkor in Cambodia [9th–16th centuries Common Era (CE)] has for many years been understood as a “hydraulic city,” an urban complex defined, sustained, and ultimately overwhelmed by a complex water management network. Since the 1980s that view has been disputed, but the debate has remained unresolved because of insufficient data on the landscape beyond the great temples: the broader context of the monumental remain…

Investigating the use of land during the medieval period at the celebrated ceremonial area of Angkor, the authors took a soil column over 2.5m deep from the inner moat of the Bakong temple. The dated pollen sequence showed that the temple moat was dug in the eighth century AD and that the agriculture of the immediate area subsequently flourished. In the tenth century AD agriculture declined and the moat became choked with water-plants. It was at …
