Social Resources for Transplanted Children and Families in European Union Hospitals of ERN TransplantChild
Social well-being is an intrinsic part of the current concept of health. In the context of chronic disease, there are many challenges we face in order to provide social well-being to patients and their families, even more if we talk about rare diseases. TransplantChild, a European Reference Network (ERN) in paediatric transplantation, works to improve the quality of life of transplanted children. It is not possible to improve the quality of life …
Stable isotope analysis and differences in diet and social status in northern Medieval Christian Spain (9th–13th centuries CE)
Assessing individual and population variability in degenerative joint disease prevalence using generalized linear mixed models
OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we introduce the use of generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) as a better alternative to traditional statistical methods for studying factors associated to the prevalence of degenerative joint disease (DJD) in bioarchaeological contexts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DJD prevalence was assessed for the appendicular joints and the spine of a Spanish population dated from the 15th to the 18th century. Data were analyzed using c…
Bone stable isotope data of the Late Roman population (4th–7th centuries CE) from Mondragones (Granada)
Medical diagnostic methods applied to a medieval female with vitamin D deficiency from the north of Spain
Treponemal disease in the Old World? Integrated palaeopathological assessment of a 9th–11th century skeleton from north-central Spain
The hypothesis of an American origin of acquired (venereal) syphilis and other \ninfectious diseases carried by Christopher Columbus’s crew has been \nconsidered for a long time as the most plausible one, and has been supported \nrecently by considerable anthropological and molecular evidence. In this line of \nthought, it can be argued that Spain would have been the gateway of acquired \nsyphilis, which quickly expanded after the return of Colum…
The quest for the soldier’s rest
The monastery of San Andrés de Arroyo (established in 1181) is one the best examples of Cistercian architecture in the Spanish region of Castilla y León. In this study, strontium isotope ratios were used to study the population of the recently excavated graveyard of this monastery. Twenty-nine individuals (of which 13 had preserved teeth) found in burials from the 13th and 14th centuries were subjected to analysis. Enamel 87Sr/86Sr ratio values o…
Over the sands and far away
OBJECTIVES: There is an ongoing effort to characterize the genetic links between Africa and Europe, mostly using lineages and haplotypes that are specific to one continent but had an ancient origin in the other. Mitochondrial DNA has been proven to be a very useful tool for this purpose since a high number of putatively European-specific variants of the African L* lineages have been defined over the years. Due to their geographic locations, Spain…
Evaluation of large‐scale genetic structure in complex demographic and historical scenarios
Genetic structural patterns of human populations are usually a combination of long‐term evolutionary forces and short‐term social, cultural, and demographic processes. Recently, using mitochondrial DNA and Y‐chromosome loci, various studies in northern Spain have found evidence that the geographical distribution of Iron Age tribal peoples might have influenced current patterns of genetic structuring in several autochthonous populations. Using the…
Socio-cultural factors in dental diseases in the Medieval and early Modern Age of northern Spain
Evidence of trepanations in a medieval population (13th-14th century) of northern Spain (Gormaz, Soria)
The goal of this study is to describe briefly two trepanned cranial specimens from a Spanish medieval archaeological site. One of them belongs to a mature male in which a grooving trepanation technique was used. The other is a mature female skull in which a scraping procedure was performed. The historical context of the individuals is assessed, as well as characteristics from both trepanations and evidence of survival after the intervention. In t…
Dental Indicators Suggest Health Improvement Associated with Increased Food Diversity in Modern Age Spain
Type I Monteggia fracture-dislocation in a monk from a 17th-18th century necropolis of Valladolid (Spain)
This paper reports the study of the osseous remains of an adult male (30–35 years) from a Spanish urban necropolis dating from the pre-industrial age (17th–18th centuries). We have diagnosed the presence of a severe unreduced forearm fracture, which has been classified as a Type I Monteggia fracture in the left arm. Injury occurred by a complete and poorly resolved ulnar fracture in its upper third. As result of this ulna fracture a radial head d…
