Perceptions of honey bee management information sources among backyard and sideliner beekeepers in the United States
Ambiguity and clarity in residential yard ordinances across metropolitan areas in the United States
Despite the social and ecological importance of residential spaces across the country, scant research examines urban yard management policies in the U.S. Governance scholarship points to the implementation challenges of navigating policy language. Our research provides an exploration of yard ordinance language, with implications for communities across the U.S. Specifically, we sought to determine whether—and in what instances—vegetation- and grou…

Burning through organizational boundaries? Examining inter-organizational communication networks in policy-mandated collaborative bushfire planning groups
Resident Well-Being in Conservation Resettlement
Studies of forced resettlement during the creation and maintenance of national parks and protected areas have found negative socioeconomic consequences for human well-being. We investigated residents' social and economic well-being following a citizen-initiated resettlement program in Padampur, Nepal. We found a difference between voluntary and forced resettlement respondents in overall satisfaction as well as evaluation of land quality and emplo…
Conceptualizing Multiple Nontimber Forest Product Harvest and Harvesting Motivations Among Balsam Bough Pickers in Northern Minnesota
Based on interviews with balsam bough pickers in northern Minnesota (n = 41), this study uses data related to all nontimber forest products (NTFP) harvested to explore benefits of multiple-NTFP analysis, and the utility of two concepts in understanding multiple-NTFP harvesting. First assuming that economic activity is cultural, we use the concept of pluriform economy to disaggregate NTFP activity, while the concept of cultural keystone products i…

The Look of the Land
Many forest and fire agencies seek to influence homeowners to manage vegetation near their home to reduce wildfire risk. To be successful managers need to understand the range of existing landscape typologies based on a defensible space evaluation, homeowners' activities for wildfire preparedness, and what they value in landscape attributes. Interviews and visits with 80 homeowners at risk of wildfire in the wildland–urban interface of northern M…
Public policies for managing urban growth and protecting open space
Volunteer Macroinvertebrate Monitoring in the United States
Emergence of local citizen monitoring groups has provided a structure for public participation in environmental issues but little is known about how these groups are achieving their goals. We examine a subset of citizen monitoring groups in the United States that conduct volunteer macroinvertebrate monitoring (VMM) as a tool for investigating stream health. Through a survey of VMM groups throughout the United States and interviews with state lead…
