  • Exploring sibling influences on school‐aged child injuries

    Open Access•Caroline C Piotrowski, Lynne Warda•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2024

Our aim was to investigate if structural and relational characteristics of sibling relationships moderated the association between known injury risk factors and child injuries. Prior to the pandemic, 80 Canadian parents of two school‐aged biological siblings completed standardized questionnaires concerning child risk‐taking behaviours and injury frequency; they also reported on sibling caregiving. Children reported on sibling warmth. Wider age sp…

  • Exploring Linkages Between Mother-Child and Sibling Relationship Quality and Prosocial Behavior Between School-Aged and Adolescent Siblings

    Open Access•Caroline C Piotrowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2024•Referências: 29

The present study investigated the degree to which the quality of sibling relationships interacted with the quality of mother-child relationships to concurrently predict prosocial behavior between school-aged siblings while taking age spacing into account. Forty-five families with two school-aged siblings were recruited from the community. Prosocial behavior was coded from unstructured laboratory observation of sibling interaction. Both children …

  • Prosocial behaviour between siblings exposed to intimate partner violence

    Open Access•Caroline C Piotrowski, Rachel Wiebe et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2022•Referências: 8

Children's prosocial behaviour is a core feature of their social development as well as their resilience, but it has not yet been examined in siblings exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). The goals of the present study were: (1) To describe prosocial behaviour between siblings exposed to IPV by exploring linkages with exposure to violence, sibling spacing, child age, and self‐esteem; (2) To investigate if prosocial behaviour varied as a fu…

  • Linking a History of Childhood Abuse to Adult Health among Canadians

Open Access•Margherita Cameranesi, Lisa M Lix et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

A history of childhood abuse has been linked to serious and long-lasting problems in adulthood. We developed two theoretical models concerning how early adverse experiences affect health in adulthood, and we tested the empirical fit of the two models in a population-based representative sample of Canadian adults (N = 25,113) using a structural equation modelling (SEM) technique, path analysis. The first model included direct pathways by which a h…

  • Paternal Depressive Symptoms and Marital Quality

Open Access•Kristene Cheung, Jennifer Theule et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Theory & Review•2019•Referências: 13

Paternal depression is typically negatively associated with marital quality; however, the magnitude of the relationship varies across studies. The objectives of this study were to clarify the strength of the association and explore whether study‐specific factors moderate the strength of the relationship. The present meta‐analysis consisted of 42 studies that included a quantitative comparison between concurrent paternal depressive symptoms and ma…

  • Maternal Social and Economic Factors and Infant Morbidity, Mortality, and Congenital Anomaly

    Leanne Kosowan, J Mignone et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2018

Experiences during infancy create durable and heritable patterns of social deprivation and illness producing health disparities. This retrospective cohort study of 71 836 infants from Winnipeg, Manitoba, assessed associations between maternal social and economic factors and infant mortality, morbidity, and congenital anomaly. This study found that newborn and postneonatal hospital readmissions are inversely associated with geography. Additionally…

  • Challenges in the Accurate Surveillance of Booster Seat and Bicycle Helmet Usage by Children

Open Access•Curt Pankratz, Lynne Warda et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Motor vehicle collisions and bicycle collisions and falls are a leading cause of death by preventable injury for children. In order to design, implement and evaluate campaigns and programs aimed at improving child safety, accurate surveillance is needed. This paper examined the challenges that confront efforts to collect surveillance data relevant to child traffic safety, including observation, interview, and focus group methods. Strategies to ad…

  • My Brother's Teacher? Siblings and Literacy Development in the Home

    Open Access•Laura Sokal, Caroline C Piotrowski et al.•ARTICLE•Education Research International•2011•Citada por: 3•Referências: 22

Frequency of sibling literacy interactions were examined in 134 families with at least two children, where at least one of the children attended school in grade one to grade four. Parents in the majority of families reported that their children read together on a regular basis without a parent present. This held across various demographic constellations including gender of the older child. However, children from families with three or more childr…
