Voices of Young Women in Interfaith Marriages
This qualitative study captures the experiences of young women in an interfaith marriage, in a social context where ethnic/religious identity is not contested or threatened. Perceptions and Reasons for Veiling
This qualitative study aimed to capture the views and reasons for veiling by young Muslim women in a social context where ethnic/religious identity is not contested or threatened. In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with young Muslim women who had started wearing the veil for the past four to five years. African Cultures and the Five-Factor Model of Personality
The purpose of this study was to assess if a specific personality structure and personality profile might be observed in Africa comparing data from four African regions ( N = 1,774) with data from Burkina Faso ( N = 717) and Switzerland ( N = 1,787), according to the Five-Factor Model (FFM). Acculturation Strategies, Personality Traits and Acculturation Stress
This study examined the influence of acculturation strategies (integration and marginalisation) and personality variables of big five trials on acculturative stress among a convenience sample of 76 first generation adults who immigrated to Mauritius after transnational marriages. Depression-Related Distress in Mauritian and South African Adolescent Girls
Self-reports of depression-related distress were obtained from girls of 14 to 17 years of age living in communities of low socioeconomic status in Mauritius (n = 198) and South Africa (n = 275). Of the girls in the two samples, 26.3 and 21.5%, respectively, had thought about self-harm during the past 5 yr., while between 14.6 and 16.7% had made self-harm attempts. This exploratory study examines the HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes and perception of personal risk of 160 youths in Mauritius. Data was gathered with the help of a structured interview schedule. Results indicate that more than half of the sample had moderate knowledge of AIDS and liberal attitudes toward people with AIDS. However, the relationship between knowledge and attitudes was not significant, indicating that being knowledgeable abou…
