Prehistoric Irrigation in Central Utah
In 1928, Noel Morss was shown 'irrigation ditches' along Pleasant Creek on the Dixie National Forest near Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, by a local guide who contended they were ancient. We relocated the site and mapped the route of an unusual mountain irrigation canal. We conducted excavations and employed OSL and AMS14C showing historic irrigation, and an earlier event between AD 1460 and 1636. Geomorphic evidence indicates that the canal ex…

On Prey Mobility, Prey Rank, and Foraging Goals
In their recent paper 'In Pursuit of Mobile Prey,' Bird, Bliege-Bird, and Codding (2009) identify a negative relationship between body size and post-encounter returns among Martu prey in western Australia, attributing the phenomena to the greater mobility of large animals and associated risk of hunting failure. Excavation of a rockshelter in southern Jordan yielded a record of habitation by pastoralists beginning about A.C. 1650 and continuing to the present. Ethnography and oral history associate the site with the Bedul Bedouin of Petra over the past century. The 3.6 m deep deposits yielded seven radiocarbon dates, microbotanical remains, goat and sheep bones, and a variety of artifacts. There was a shift in use of the shelter in the late 17th century …

Recent applications of models of optimal foraging behavior to human foraging economies are summarized and evaluated. These models predict patterns of prey choice, habitat use, time allocation, settlement pattern, and foraging group size that will maximize some objective currency (such as the net rate of energy capture while foraging) under the constraints of resource characteristics and forager capabilities pertaining to a particular situation.
