The Two Faces of the “Ocean”
Subjective and intersubjective uses of Japanese verbs of cognition in conversation
The present study examines two commonly-used Japanese verbs of cognition, WAKARU and SHIRU, in naturally occurring conversation, and demonstrates that these verbs are expressions of position and attitude that are relevant both to individual speakers (i.e., subjective uses) and to relational activities among participants (i.e., intersubjective uses). My naturally occurring conversation data supports Lee (2006) that there seems to be a general prin…
Japanese negative suffix nai in conversation
The study investigates how speakers use ‘ nai-expressions’ (a verb root + the negative suffix (a)nai as in shabere-nai ‘cannot speak’ and ik-anai ‘will/do not go’) in naturally occurring conversation. The data demonstrate that although negative utterances have been considered to be ‘grammatical’ constructions that simply negate the truth value of a proposition, nai-expressions show formulaic tendencies and serve not only to express a speaker’s em…

From a spatial to a subjective framework
The current study examines pre-modern and modern Japanese texts from the seventh ~ twentieth century, and documents the semantic and pragmatic change of ni -marked NPs, which include “dative subjects” and NPs which appear to refer to human referents. The data demonstrates that what are called “dative subjects” in modern Japanese are diachronically and synchronically related to the most prototypical meaning/usage of ni -marked NPs as a spatial fra…
A blurring of categorization
The Japanese connective de has been found to be the most frequently occurring connective in spontaneous conversation. Yet, studies on de have been rather scarce compared to other connectives such as demo ‘but’ and dakara ‘so; therefore’. The current study examines the occurrence of this highly frequent connective (as well as its variants, sorede and nde) and demonstrates its very distinctive characteristics in on-line interaction. The results rev…
Iconicity and Viewpoint in Determining Word Order in Japanese Dative Construction
From a pragmatic marker to a direct object marker
Several researchers have reported the increased use of o and semantic/pragmatic or syntactic motivations for direct object marking based on texts from between the 8th and 11th centuries. However, very few studies documented direct object marking after that period on until Modern Japanese, and the claims regarding semantic/pragmatic or syntactic motivations were not substantiated. By quantitatively examining an 11th century text and two later tran…
Mentholated cigarettes and non-lung smoking related cancers in California, USA
We sought to discover if the higher risk among men of lung cancer associated with menthola ted than with plain cigarettes1 applied as well to other smoking related cancers (upper aerodi gestive: mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus; pancreas, renal adenocarcinoma, other urinary tract (urothelium), cervix). In 1979-1985, 79 946 subscribers of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in northern California, age 30-89 years, completed a detailed que…
