Small public acts carry with them the keys to the cultural and institutional worlds in which they occur. To understand why a particular person in the Bamenda Grassfields of Cameroon changed his name, and thereby the symbol of his public identity, this study presents the cultural and political context in which such an act makes sense. It argues that their sampling and statistical pro cedures are incorrect, and that their hypotheses cannot be tested on the data as presented
The Extensionist Hypothesis and Marking Rules in the Formal Analysis of Kinship Terminology
A number of kinds of formal analysis of kinship terminology have appeared in the anthropological literature. This paper supports the validity of extension rule analysis as an approach to this domain. Data are presented from a kin term system that includes culturally appropriate variability to show that, via semantic marking rules, the frequency with which informants associate kin types with particular kin terms parallels the order in which an ext…

The suggestion is made that such processes may aid an ethnographer in describing and understanding social change. A brief description of changes in household composition is included
