The genetic landscape of Mediterranean North African populations through complete mtDNA sequences
The analysis of the complete mtDNA genome has allowed for the identification of a North African sub-lineage that might be ignored by the analysis of partial mtDNA control region sequences, highlighting the phylogeographic relevance of mtDNA complete sequence analysis
The black legend on the Spanish presence in the low countries
OBJECTIVES: War atrocities committed by the Spanish army in the Low Countries during the 16th century are so ingrained in the collective memory of Belgian and Dutch societies that they generally assume a signature of this history to be present in their genetic ancestry. Historians claim this assumption is a consequence of the so-called "Black Legend" and negative propaganda portraying and remembering Spanish soldiers as extreme sexual aggressors.…
Y‐chromosome diversity in Native Mexicans reveals continental transition of genetic structure in the Americas
The genetic characterization of Native Mexicans is important to understand multiethnic based features influencing the medical genetics of present Mexican populations, as well as to the reconstruct the peopling of the Americas. We describe the Y‐chromosome genetic diversity of 197 Native Mexicans from 11 populations and 1,044 individuals from 44 Native American populations after combining with publicly available data. We found extensive heterogene…
Mitochondrial DNA structure in North Africa reveals a genetic discontinuity in the Nile Valley
Human population movements in North Africa have been mostly restricted to an east‐west direction due to the geographical barriers imposed by the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. Although these barriers have not completely impeded human migrations, genetic studies have shown that an east‐west genetic gradient exists. However, the lack of genetic information of certain geographical areas and the focus of some studies in parts of the North A…
Admixture and sexual bias in the population settlement of La Réunion Island (Indian Ocean)
La Réunion, one of the three Mascarene islands located in the Indian Ocean, remained devoid of inhabitants until it was first colonized by the French in the middle of the 17th century. The continuous flow of foreign‐born slaves and immigrant workers from Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and China to work on coffee and sugar cane plantations led to the island becoming a melting pot of people of multiple ethnic origins. To establish the impact of the…
Brief communication
The hypervariable region‐1 and four nucleotide positions (10400, 10873, 12308, and 12705) of the coding region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were analyzed in 441 individuals belonging to eight populations (Daba, Fali, Fulbe, Mandara, Uldeme, Podokwo, Tali, and Tupuri) from North Cameroon and four populations (Bakaka, Bassa, Bamileke, and Ewondo) from South Cameroon. All mtDNAs were assigned to five haplogroups: three sub‐Saharan (L1, L2, and L3), …
A Common Haplotype Associated with the Basque 2362AG-TCATCT Mutation in the Muscular Calpain-3 Gene
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2A (LGMD2A) is caused by any of over 150 mutations in the calpain-3 (CAPN3) gene. Of those, 2362AG --> TCATCT is particularly prevalent in Basque patients, and this mutation was hypothesized to have arisen in the Basque Country. To explore the natural history of this mutation, we genotyped 65 Basque and non-Basque patients with LGMD2A who carry the 2362AG --> TCATCT mutation for four microsatellites within or f…
Basic molecular genetics for epidemiologists
This is the first of a series of three glossaries on molecular genetics. This article focuses on basic molecular terms
Mitochondrial DNA from pre‐Columbian Ciboneys from Cuba and the prehistoric colonization of the Caribbean
To assess the genetic affinities of extinct Ciboneys (also called Guanajuatabeys) from Cuba, 47 pre‐Columbian skeletal samples belonging to this group were analyzed using ancient DNA techniques. At the time of European contact, the center and east of Cuba were occupied by agriculturalist Taino groups, while the west was mainly inhabited by Ciboneys, hunter‐gatherers who have traditionally been considered a relic population descending from the ini…
Human mitochondrial DNA sequence variation in the Moroccan population of the Souss area
Detailed knowledge of the possible geographic origin of each sequence facilitated an interpretation of both internal diversity parameters and between-population relationships. The sub-Saharan admixture in the Souss Valley matched the south-north cline of sub-Saharan influence in North Africa, also evident in the genetic distances of North African populations to Europeans and sub-Saharan Africans
Georgian and Kurd mtDNA sequence analysis shows a lack of correlation between languages and female genetic lineages
Mitochondrial DNA sequences from Georgians and Kurds were analyzed in order to test the possible correlation between female lineages and languages in these two neighboring West Eurasian groups. Mitochondrial sequence pools in both populations are very similar despite their different linguistic and prehistoric backgrounds. Both populations present mtDNA lineages that clearly belong to the European gene pool, as shown by 1) similar nucleotide and s…
Genealogy reconstruction from short tandem repeat genotypes in an Amazonian population
We have reconstructed partial genealogies in a sample of 44 SW Amazonian Rondonian Surui, in which 45 dinucleotide short tandem repeat polymorphisms had previously been typed. The genotypes of 488 pairs of individuals having an age difference of 13 or greater were compared, and parentage was excluded if a pair failed to share an allele at more than one locus. In order to test the power of this method, we computed the expected distribution of the …
Population history of Corsica
Genetic and linguistic differentiations within Corsica were analysed and compared; the genetic relationships of Corsica to other Mediterranean populations were also studied. Lexical distances between 49 Corsican localities were computed from a standard word list; trees built from these distances were compared with average linkage and neighbour-joining trees of genetic distances. Our lexical distance results confirmed the north/south dialectal sub…
Sequence diversity of the control region of mitochondrial DNA in Tuscany and its implications for the peopling of Europe
The control region of mitochondrial DNA has been widely studied in various human populations. This paper reports sequence data for hypervariable segments 1 and 2 of the control region from a population from southern Tuscany (Italy). The results confirm the high variability of the control region, with 43 different haplotypes in 49 individuals sampled. The comparison of this set of data with other European populations allows the reconstruction of t…
Principal component analysis of gene frequencies and the origin of Basques
The genetic peculiarity of the Basque population has long been noted. We aim to describe Basque distinctiveness in space and assess the internal Basque heterogeneity. All these aspects are relevant to the question of the origin of Basques. After a thorough literature search, a data base was created containing all the available data on gene frequencies in the Iberian Peninsula and France. Twenty‐nine systems, comprising 71 alleles, were used to ca…
