  • New equally readable charts based on anisotropy of peripheral visual acuity 1

Open Access•MICHIAKI KONDO, YUKYU ARARAGI et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2008

Anstis’ equally readable chart for visual acuity has been widely quoted in textbooks on visual perception. However, this chart does not reflect the anisotropy of peripheral visual acuity that has been reported by previous studies. Here, the authors reexamined peripheral visual acuity by measuring resolution thresholds for Landolt rings and recognition thresholds for hiragana letters as a function of retinal eccentricity across two principal retin…

  • Oculomotor responses of stereo‐anomalous observers to pulse and ramp disparities

Open Access•Koichi Shimono, SACHIO NAKAMIZO et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2000

We examined oculomotor responses to binocular disparities of one stereo‐normal and three stereo‐anomalous observers, who were identified through a stereoscopic depth‐discrimination task, in two experimental conditions. In the pulse disparity condition, crossed and uncrossed disparities (1–6°) were briefly presented (for .25–2.0 s). In the ramp disparity condition, disparities were varied continuously with constant velocities (.7–2.0°/s) and with …

  • Depth perception of stereokinetic cone and absolute distance information

SACHIO NAKAMIZO, MICHIAKI KONDO•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1995

Magnitudes of the apparent depth of eccentric circles and real cone stimuli were measured as a function of viewing distance when they were rotated on a circular disc and viewed monocularly. The diameters of the largest circle and base of the cone were 5, 10, 20, and 40 cm at the viewing distances, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 m, respectively. The height of each cone was equal to the diameter of its base. The cones were tilted 15 deg from the fronto-parallel …

  • Effects of eye movements on the apparent depth of moving targets

MICHIAKI KONDO, SACHIO NAKAMIZO•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1982

Experiment I examined the difference limen (DL) for the direction of apparent rotation in depth of the moving target, in which two targets moving sinusoidally, in the fronto-parallel plane with phase difference were dichoptically presented to the eyes either fixating a stationary point or tracking the target. The results indicated that the discriminability to the change in depth for the moving target was reduced during tracking. Experiment II exa…
