Reading Rescue
The Reading Rescue tutoring intervention model was investigated with 64 low–socioeconomic status, language-minority first graders with reading difficulties. School staff provided tutoring in phonological awareness, systematic phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. Tutored students made significantly greater gains reading words and comprehending text than controls, who received a small-group intervention (d = 0.70) or neither int…
Bayesian Interval Estimation of Multiple Correlations with Missing Data
A Bayesian method for obtaining an interval estimate of the population squared multiple correlation from an incomplete multivariate normal data set is described. The method is applicable to data sets where values are missing on any combination of the dependent and independent variables. Further, the missing data need not be missing in a completely random fashion. The estimates are constructed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo procedure known as Gi…
Not Correcting for Restriction of Range can be Advantageous
In validating a selection test (x), complete test-criterion (y) scores are typically not available for all cases. Given this incomplete xy data set, one can estimate the population correlation using either the uncorrected correlation (computed using the data only from the selected group) or the so-called corrected correlation. Although the uncorrected value is always more biased than the corrected value, the former can have a substantially smalle…
Predicting Academic Achievement Over a One Year Period
This investigation considered the prediction of academic achievement over a one-year time period. Academic achievement was assessed in terms of four scales of the CTBS battery. The predictor variables were academic aptitude (assessed in terms of the SFTAA battery), age, sex, and grade level. A one-year time period intervened between the administration of the CTBS and SFTAA batteries. The results showed high levels of predictive validity in terms …
The Analysis of Multivariate Group Differences
A computer program for evaluating the differences between k ≥ 2 groups on p ≥ 1 dependent variables is described. The statistical rationale for this program is based upon the Roy Union Intersection approach. A useful feature of the program is the computation of simultaneous confidence intervals for comparing the groups on each dependent variable and each discriminant function
The Differential Predictability of the College Performance of Males and Females
Multiple regression analyses using college freshman grade point average as the dependent variable and six high school scores as predictor variables were performed separately in 10 undergraduate colleges of the City University of New York. The multiple correlation coefficients, derived on the cross-validation samples, substantially reinforced the previously reported finding that females are more predictable than males in academic settings

A Comparison of the Predictive Accuracy of a Pooling and a Subgrouping Prediction Strategy
The subgrouping strategy has been employed in a number of studies (Fredriksen & Gilbert, 1960; Fredriksen & Melville, 1964; Ghiselli, 1956; Klein, Rock & Evans, 1968; Rock, Evans & Klein, 1969; Malnig, 1969). In each of these studies it was shown that after partitioning a sample into g subgroups and performing a separate regression analysis within each group, one could identify one or more subgroups having a larger multiple correlation than the t…
A Monte Carlo Study of the Accuracy of a Hierarchical Grouping Procedure
The accuracy of the Ward-Hook method of hierarchical grouping was studied using artificial data sampled from a mixture distribution. The expected number of sample misclassifications as well as the variance of these mimlassifications were taken as the criteria of subgrouping accuracy. It was found that the expected sample misclassificatiun rate was a positively biased estimator of the population probability of misclassifioartion. Further, by in- c…
