Demand-led Growth Decompositions and Its Uses to Explain Growth Experiences
The objective of this paper is to provide a survey on the methods of demand-led decomposition and its different uses on the analyses of the patterns of growth, as well as some criticisms and limitations of such methods and analyses. We will present and compare the decompositions based on the net-exports method (used mainly by neo-Kaleckians and Comparative Political Economy), the attribution method, and the ‘Supermultiplier method’ (used mainly b…
The Fourth International Workshop on Demand-Led Growth
Introduction to the Symposium on
Conflict, Inertia, and Phillips Curve from a Sraffian Standpoint
The recent post-Keynesian debate on conflict inflation revolves around plausible magnitudes of the parameters of the standard model. We assess this debate by examining the economic meaning of the 'bargaining' and 'indexation' parameters, and proposing a reinterpretation in which the bargaining power is reflected in the relative frequency of wage and price increases in a period. Inflation then depends on the size of the inconsistent distributive c…
Components of Autonomous Demand Growth and Financial Feedbacks
Since autonomous demand has to be financed independently of income from current production, this paper starts with the requirement that autonomous demand-led growth models have to include endogenous money and credit, and hence financial dynamics. It then seeks to make two contributions. First, we show that the inclusion of financial stock-flow interactions in a simple closed economy autonomous demand-led growth model provides an endogenous mechan…
Cycles
The demand-led supermultiplier growth model proposes that business investment is induced by income while autonomous expenditures determine economic growth. In this issue, Nikiforos, Santetti, and von Arnim (2022) argue that the supermultiplier model cannot generate business cycles compatible with empirical observation. This paper shows that this conclusion is a consequence of the misspecification of the variable chosen to represent the investment…
Demand-led Growth, Conflict Inflation and Distribution
We introduce the symposium with papers presented at the 3rd Workshop on Demand-led Growth. It gathers six contributions on autonomous demand, capacity utilization, conflict inflation and income distribution. It advances the research of previous editions of the Workshop by going deeper into (i) institutional and sectoral features; (ii) the application of demand-led growth and conflict-claims models to the analysis of concrete historical experience…
