A network analysis of psychosocial functioning and posttraumatic stress disorder and depression symptoms in a nationally representative U.S. veteran cohort
These five symptoms may serve as potential targets of interventions to bolster psychosocial functioning among trauma-exposed veterans. Future research should include the application of network models to intensive longitudinal data to gain insights into whether these symptoms may have a causal role in impairing psychosocial functioning. Treatment outcomes of sexual minority women (SMW) veterans with military sexual trauma (MST)
SMW veterans may particularly benefit from therapies that focus on emotion regulation, interpersonal skills, and/or provide strategies that address day-to-day stressors (e.g., STAIR, PCT). (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
Trauma symptoms, minority stress, and substance use
Posttraumatic stress symptoms are very high among sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) people. Development and testing of trauma interventions with SGM people is needed, but first we need to understand who among SGM people are at greatest risk of posttraumatic stress symptoms, how minority stress may contribute, and the frequency of substance use comorbidity with significant posttraumatic stress symptoms among SGM people. General linear models and…
Mental health treatment experiences among sexual and gender minority individuals
Effective treatments for trauma should be informed by the needs of the diverse groups that comprise the SGM community
Prevalence and sociocultural correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder and complex PTSD among Chinese community health service users in Hong Kong
OBJECTIVES: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is a newly recognized trauma disorder in ICD-11. Little is known about the prevalence and correlates of CPTSD in primary care settings. Its cultural aspects also remained minimally explored. This study investigated the prevalence and sociocultural correlates of PTSD and complex PTSD among Chinese community health service users in Hong Kong. METHODS: = 376) who had recently received servic…
Factor structure of the international trauma questionnaire in trauma exposed LGBTQ+ adults
This is the first study to examine the role of minority stressors alongside exposure to psychological traumas in ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD and emphasizes the inclusion of minority stressors in trauma-related assessments. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Parent-reported posttraumatic stress reactions in children and adolescents
Russia's war escalation in Ukraine resulted in an increased estimated prevalence of war-related PTSD in children of various ages. Urgent efforts to increase the capacity of national pediatric mental health services are critically needed to mitigate these challenges in an environment of limited financial and human resources. Increasing access to care for trauma‐exposed rural veterans
PURPOSE: While rural veterans with trauma exposure report high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and functional impairment, utilization of health services is low. This pilot study used mixed qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the potential benefits of a transdiagnostic web-based skills training program paired with telehealth-delivered coaching to address a range of symptoms and functional difficulties. The s…
Feasibility and Acceptability of a Web-Based Peer Navigation-Psychoeducational HIV Intervention for Women
This study examined feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a pilot randomized controlled trial (BRIDGES) designed to improve HIV care outcomes among syndemic-affected women living with HIV (WLHA). We enrolled and randomized adult WLHA who were out-of-care or at risk of falling out-of-care and experienced any syndemic condition(s) into BRIDGES ( n = 11) or standard of care ( n = 13). BRIDGES employed peer navigation one-on-one sess…
Trauma-related differences in socio-emotional functioning predict housing and employment outcomes in homeless veterans
Females have more complex patterns of childhood adversity
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been identified as an important public health problem with serious implications. Less well understood is how distinct configurations of childhood adversities carry differential risks for mental health, emotional, and social outcomes later in life. Objective: To determine if distinct profiles of childhood adversities exist for males and females and to examine if unique associations exist between…
Does requiring trauma exposure affect rates of ICD-11 PTSD and complex PTSD? Implications for DSM–5
Certain non-Criterion A events involving extreme fear and horror should be considered traumatic. The ICD-11 approach of providing clinical guidance rather than a formal definition offers a viable solution to some of the problems associated with the current and previous attempts to define traumatic exposure. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
The International Trauma Questionnaire
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to finalize the development of the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ), a self-report diagnostic measure of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD), as defined in the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). METHOD: The optimal symptom indicators of PTSD and CPTSD were identified by applying item response theory (IRT) analysis to data from a trauma-…
Emotion regulation mediates the relationship between Aces and physical and mental health
Interventions that focus on improving emotion regulation skills might provide an efficient "transdiagnostic" treatment strategy for both psychological and physical health problems. The study successfully tested a mediational model that identified a common pathway influencing both mental and physical health symptoms. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
A review of current evidence regarding the ICD-11 proposals for diagnosing PTSD and complex PTSD
An assessment of the construct validity of the ICD-11 proposal for complex posttraumatic stress disorder
Results provide initial evidence regarding the factorial validity of the proposed ICD-11 model of CPTSD. In addition, current results support the proposals of the ICD-11 that exposure to abuse during early development is associated with a greater likelihood of CPTSD than PTSD. The study contributes to a growing body of empirical data supporting the construct validity of CPTSD as a unique diagnostic entity. (PsycINFO Database Record
Implementation and Evaluation of the Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) in a Community Setting in the Context of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Purpose: The objective of this article is to describe the implementation of the Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR), a manualized, evidence-based cognitive behavioral group treatment for childhood trauma at Cedar Centre, a community-based trauma treatment center, and describe the preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of the treatment. Method: Pre- and postmeasurements of emotion regulation, interpersonal proble…

Diagnosis and classification of disorders specifically associated with stress
The diagnostic concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other disorders specifically associated with stress have been intensively discussed among neuro- and social scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, public health planners and humanitarian aid workers around the world. PTSD and adjustment disorder are among the most widely used diagnoses in mental health care worldwide. This paper describes proposals that aim to maximize clinica…
Factors Related to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Adolescence
Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescence published from 2000 to 2011 indicate that adolescents are at greater risk of experiencing trauma than either adults or children, and that the prevalence of PTSD among adolescents is 3–57%. Age, gender, type of trauma, and repeated trauma are discussed as factors related to the increased rates of adolescent PTSD. PTSD in adolescence is also associated with suicide, substance abuse, poo…
A developmental approach to complex PTSD
Exposure to multiple traumas, particularly in childhood, has been proposed to result in a complex of symptoms that includes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as a constrained, but variable group of symptoms that highlight self‐regulatory disturbances. The relationship between accumulated exposure to different types of traumatic events and total number of different types of symptoms (symptom complexity) was assessed in an adult clinical…
Social Bonds and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Retrospective and prospective studies consistently show that individuals exposed to human-generated traumatic events carry a higher risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) than those exposed to other kinds of events. These studies also consistently identify perceptions of social support both before and after a traumatic event as an important factor in the determining vulnerability to the development of PTSD. We review the literatu…
Cumulative trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder among children exposed to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack
Two and one-half years after the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack, 204 middle school students in an immigrant community located near Ground Zero were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms as influenced by "dose" of exposure to the attack and accumulated lifetime traumas. Ninety percent of students reported at least one traumatic event other than 9/11 (e.g., community violence) with an average of 4 lifetime events …
