  • Functional Heads and Eventive Nominals

    Open Access•Xabier Artiagoitia•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2023

This article shows that Basque has a few suffixes (-era, -keta, -pen) which give rise to the type of eventive nominals described in the literature (Grimshaw; Picallo; Alexiadou, Functional Structure). Nominals headed by these suffixes are passive-like (cf. Alexiadou, Functional Structure), obligatorily take genitive arguments and are mostly restricted to unaccusative and transitive predicates, but have a very limited eventive reading: they do not…

  • Discourse Particles

Xabier Artiagoitia, Arantzazu Elordieta et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Discourse Particles•2022

Discourse particles have often been treated as a phenomenon restricted to Germanic languages (Abraham 2020) and they still raise questions about their nature as an independent category. This book reveals that this phenomenon exists in other languages as well, and provides evidence for their nature as a separate category. The volume brings together a collection of nine papers that focus on three research topics: a) the diachronic development of di…

  • Weather expressions in Basque

    Open Access•Iñigo Arteatx, Xabier Artiagoitia•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2022

We make two claims regarding weather expressions in Basque: first, based on Eriksen et al.’s (2010) typology, we show that Basque tends towards the argument type (and less frequently so to the predicate-argument type) when coding dynamic (precipitation or other) events and to both the argument and the predicate type when coding static events; Basque often has transitive structures (i.e. both transitive predicate and argument transitive types), ap…

  • Basque Genitive Case and Multiple Checking

    Open Access•Xabier Artiagoitia•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2010

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:In this article I propose (a) that Basque genitive structural case is checked in the functional projection possessive (or possessor as proposed by De Wit (1997) and others based on pioneering work by Szabolcsi); and (b) that this functional projection allows both subject and object to check case simultaneously in a multiple specifier configuration
