Bone, Trauma in
Craniometric Variation of Diverse Populations in Florida
The state of Florida is commonly ignored as a border state when it comes to issues and challenges in migrant death investigations. In the 2010 U.S. Census, Florida held the third largest Hispanic population in the United States, with almost 19 million individuals self‐identifying as Hispanic, following behind California and Texas (Ennis et al. ). Undocumented workers that arrive in the United States frequently migrate to Florida for labor, such a…
Georeferencing a Cold Case Victim With Lead, Strontium, Carbon, and Oxygen Isotopes
Two men walking across a bridge along highway I-75 found a young woman's body floating in the water below. This 1971 case has since become known as the "Little Miss Panasofkee" case. It is still an open homicide, for which neither the victim nor the perpetrator have been identified. Throughout the United States, thousands of similar cases remain open. The medicolegal communities work on these cases, as the years pass, applying new scientific meth…
Trauma Patterns in Cases of Extrajudicial Executions
Police torture and extrajudicial deaths in custody often include cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment of victims, such as repeated and severe beatings with rods, sticks, and other implements, and are often associated with fatal gunshot injuries. In these cases, victims tend to disappear but when recovered, the cause and manner of death may be falsified. Consequently, multiple autopsies are often performed with highly varied results. For examp…
Forensic Anthropology in Long-term Investigations
The objective of this paper is to examine how a humanitarian approach to long-term missing and/or unidentified persons and cold cases can increase case solvability exemplified through the investigation of deaths at the Florida Industrial School for Boys (a.k.a. Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys) in Marianna, Florida. The school closed following a century of controversy regarding abuse, malfeasance, and allegations of murder; prior to closure, the …
Practicing Forensic Anthropology
The problem of missing, endangered, and unidentified persons is increasingly approached through a human rights model with successful outcomes. Contexts vary from international investigations into war crimes, genocide, and extrajudicial killings to American "cold cases." In all these examples, anthropologists play critical roles, such as searching for clandestine graves, crime scene recovery, human identification, interviewing witnesses, repatriat…
A Comparative Study of Developmental Defects and Metabolic Diseases Among the Arikara and Earlier Northern Plains Populations
Investigations into developmental stability and congenital defects prevalent among pre-contact and historic populations, provides insight into the cultural and biological forces acting on individuals. This study investigates the occurrence of metabolic and developmental disorders at three Arikara cemeteries (Sully, 39SL4) in South Dakota (dating A.D. 1150-1750). The patterns of disorders are compared to other, earlier northern Plains groups. Part…
A new method for estimating age‐at‐death from the first rib
A new method for estimating adult age‐at‐death from the first rib was developed as a modification of the Kunos et al. (Am J Phys Anthropol 110 (1999) 303–323) method. Data were collected on three aspects of the first rib (costal face, rib head, and tubercle facet) for 470 known‐age males of Balkan ancestry collected as evidence during investigations conducted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Ages‐at‐death r…
Skeletal Trauma
Born out of the need to recover, analyze, and present physical evidence on thousands of individual victims of large-scale human rights violations, multi-national, multi-disciplinary forensic teams developed a sophisticated system for the examination of human remains and set a precedent for future investigations. Codifying this process, Skeletal

Human Rights Forum
In 2002, the AAA Committee for Human Rights (CfHR) initiated the Fellows Program in the Anthropology of Human Rights. Positions provide recipients with strong experience in human rights work, possibilities for publication, as well as the opportunity to work closely with the Committee, government agencies, and human rights-based NGOs. CfHR Research Fellow (2002-2003) Kimmerle came to the position with a strong background in the practice of anthrop…
Probable evidence of scurvy in subadults from archeological sites in Peru
Subadult scurvy is not well documented in archeological human remains despite the existence of many biomedical references indicating that bone changes do occur in some cases and, because of this, should be observable in human burials. There are several potential reasons for this gap in our knowledge of scurvy. Not all children who suffered from scurvy died of the disease or from other causes when they had scurvy. Scurvy may not leave characterist…
