  • Development of the Rural Perception Scale (RPS‐18)

Open Access•Sunny Jung Kim, Jennifer Alford‐Teaster et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2024

BACKGROUND: People living in rural areas often experience limited access to health resources, slow knowledge diffusion, and geographical isolation, and tend to be at higher risk for poor physical and mental health outcomes compared with nonrural populations. It is unclear, yet, how the concept of "rural" shapes observed differences from nonrural populations. We aim to develop a psychometrically sound scale to assess key dimensions that constitute…

  • The interaction of rurality and rare cancers for travel time to cancer care

Open Access•Tracy Onega, Jennifer Alford‐Teaster et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2023

PURPOSE: Geographic access to cancer care is known to significantly impact utilization and outcomes. Longer travel times have negative impacts for patients requiring highly specialized care, such as for rare cancers, and for those in rural areas. Scant population-based research informs geographic access to care for rare cancers and whether rurality impacts that access. METHODS: Using Medicare data (2014-2015), we identified prevalent cancers and …

  • Refining 2SVCA method for measuring telehealth accessibility of primary care physicians in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

  • Concordance of Rural‐Urban Self‐identity and ZIP Code‐Derived Rural‐Urban Commuting Area (Ruca) Designation

Open Access•Tracy Onega, Julie E Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2020

PURPOSE: This study examined the concordance between individuals' self-reported rural-urban category of their community and ZIP Code-derived Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) category. METHODS: An Internet-based survey, administered from August 2017 through November 2017, was used to collect participants' sociodemographic characteristics, self-reported ZIP Code of residence, and perception of which RUCA category best describes the community in wh…

  • Spatial Access and Local Demand for Major Cancer Care Facilities in the United States

Xun Shi, Jennifer Alford-Teaster et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2012•Citada por: 6•Referências: 31

The Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI Centers) and academic medical centers (AMCs) form the “backbone” of the cancer care system in the United States. We conducted a nationwide analysis and generated a high-resolution map detailing spatial variation in the potentially unfulfilled demand for these facilities. A local demand value incorporates spatial access to the facilities and the number of local potential patients.…

  • Alcohol Retail Density and Demographic Predictors of Health Disparities

Ethan M Berke, Susanne E Tanski et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Citada por: 8•Referências: 16

Objectives. We examined whether the geographic density of alcohol retailers was greater in geographic areas with higher levels of demographic characteristics that predict health disparities. Methods. We obtained the locations of all alcohol retailers in the continental United States and created a map depicting alcohol retail outlet density at the US Census tract level. US Census data provided tract-level measures of poverty, education, crowding, …
