  • HIV treatment failure in tertiary care

Open Access•Peter Mac Asaga, Axel Kroeger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Despite antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up in sub-Saharan Africa, treatment failure remains a significant challenge. We characterised virological and immunological outcomes among people living with HIV (PLHIV) attending tertiary care facilities in Nigeria, with exploratory analysis of potential mechanistic factors. Methods This multi-centre cross-sectional study enrolled 517 HIV-positive adults from four Nigerian tertiary facilities…

  • Facing migration under adverse conditions

Open Access•Gloria Omaira Bautista Espinel, Gloria Omaira Bautista et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Both Venezuelan migrants and their Colombian neighbours suffer significantly from the consequences of poverty and stressful living conditions. As such, they require equal attention from policymakers and public services. This attention should encompass enhanced security in the public spaces, accessible legal advice, and comprehensive health support

  • Enabling countries to manage outbreaks

Open Access•Mikaela Schlesinger, Franklyn Edwin Prieto Alvarado et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Dengue is currently the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne viral illness in the world, with over half of the world's population living in areas at risk of dengue. As dengue continues to spread and become more of a health burden, it is essential to have tools that can predict when and where outbreaks might occur to better prepare vector control operations and communities' responses. One such predictive tool, the Early Warning and Respo…

  • Early warning and response system for dengue outbreaks

Open Access•Gustavo Sanchez Tejeda, David Benitez Valladares et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Dengue disease epidemics have increased in time and space due to climatic and non-climatic factors such as urbanization. In the absence of an effective vaccine, preventing dengue outbreak relies on vector control activities. Employing computerized tools to predict outbreaks and respond in advance has great potential for improving dengue disease control. Evidence of integrating or implementing such applications into control programs and their impa…

  • Risk of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya transmission in the metropolitan area of Cucuta, Colombia

Open Access•Maria Angelica Carrillo, Rocío Cárdenas et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The production of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes occurred almost exclusively in concrete ground tanks for laundry (lavadero), the primary intervention target. The baseline study provides necessary evidence for the design and implementation of a cluster randomized intervention trial in Colombia

  • The Seroprevalence and Hidden Burden of Chikungunya Endemicity and Malaria Mono- and Coinfection in Nigeria

Open Access•Peter Asaga Mac, Philomena E Airiohuodion et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Background: Mosquito-borne infections are of global health concern because of their rapid spread and upsurge, which creates a risk for coinfections. Chikungunya, an arbovirus disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti or A. albopictus, and malaria, a parasitic disease transmitted by Anopheles gambiae, are prevalent in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, but their burden and possible coinfections are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the…

  • Use and acceptance of long lasting insecticidal net screens for dengue prevention in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico

Open Access•Catrin Huws Jones, David Benítez-Valladares et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

The screens are widely accepted by the population, but the project implementation could be improved by reassuring the community of its legitimacy in the context of insecurity. More community engagement and better information sharing structures are needed. The screens could be a major new dengue prevention tool suitable for widespread use, if further research supports their entomological and epidemiological effectiveness and their acceptability in …

  • Sharing experiences

Open Access•Shiraz Badurdeen, David Benitez Valladares et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Considerable variation between countries was observed with regard to surveillance, outbreak detection, and response. Through discussion at the expert meeting, suggestions were made for the development of a more standardised approach in the form of a model contingency plan, with agreed outbreak definitions and country-specific risk assessment schemes to initiate early response activities according to the outbreak phase. This would also allow great…

  • Active case detection in national visceral leishmaniasis elimination programs in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal

Open Access•M Mamun Huda, Siddhivinayak Hirve et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

National programs can adapt ACD strategies for detection of new VL/PKDL cases. However adequate time and resources are required for training, planning and strengthening referral services to overcome challenges faced by the programs in conducting ACD

  • Dengue vector management using insecticide treated materials and targeted interventions on productive breeding-sites in Guatemala

Open Access•Nidia Rizzo, Rodrigo Gramajo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Even under difficult environmental conditions (open houses, tropical rainfall, challenging container types mainly in the peridomestic environment) the combination of insecticide treated curtains and to a less extent drum covers and interventions targeting the productive container types can reduce the dengue vector population significantly

  • Influences on condom use among young men in Managua, Nicaragua

Andreas Kalk, Axel Kroeger et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2001

The study was designed to determine patterns and prevalence of condom use and associated factors among young men in a district of Managua, Nicaragua. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected. Findings suggested increasing levels of condom use in comparison to previous research among young men in urban Managua. However, high risk sexual behaviour remained frequent. Condom use decreased with increasing emotional proximity to the sexual …

Open Access•Axel Kroeger, Alfredo E Zurita et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•1988•Citada por: 5

An interview survey on health and health care, conducted in a representative sample of 1456 households of the province of Chaco in north-east Argentina, showed the following results: The ethnic composition showed a predominance of ‘Criollos’ in rural settings and of ‘European’ descendants in urban areas. Ethnic group was shown to be the best socio-economic discriminator, with indigenous people belonging to the lowest group, followed by ‘Criollos’…

  • Health Interview Surveys in Developing Countries

    Axel Kroeger•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1983

Health interview surveys are carried out to gain knowledge of people's perceived morbidity, their use of different kinds of health services, and their perceived need for health care. Many of such studies in less developed countries (LDCs) have failed to consider the methodological improvements which have been developed in health care research in recent years. In the first part of this paper the research on methodological issues is summarized and …
