Food insecurity and water insecurity measurement in Brazil
Predictors of persistent moderate and severe food insecurity in a longitudinal survey in Mexico during the Covid-19 pandemic
Background Household food insecurity (HFI) increased in Latin America by 9% between 2019 and 2020. Scant evidence shows who was unable to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to use a Machine Learning (ML) approach to identify consistent and influential predictors of persistent moderate or severe HFI over 2 years. Methods We use a three-wave longitudinal telephone survey with a probabilistic sample representative of the Mexican populat…
Factors associated with loneliness in Latin-American family care partners during the Covid-19 pandemic
Regardless of their living and health situation, during the pandemic, loneliness increased in all groups of care partners. These should be taken in consideration when planning public health approaches for crises such as pandemics or other large-scale disruptive events
Association between Feelings of Trust and Security with Subjective Health among Mexican Migrants in the New York City Area
The size of the foreign-born population living in the United States makes migrants' health a substantive policy issue. The health status of Mexican immigrants might be affected by the level of social capital and the social context, including the rhetoric around immigration. We hypothesize that a diminished perception of trust and safety in the community has a negative impact on self-reported health. In a cross-sectional study, we conducted a surv…
Adaptation of a community health outreach model during the Covid-19 pandemic
The Ventanillas de Salud (VDS - "Health Windows") are a culturally sensitive outreach program within the 49 Mexican Consulates in the United States that provides information and health care navigation support to underserved and uninsured Mexican immigrants. During the COVID-19 pandemic the VDS rapidly transitioned to remote operations adding new services. Based on the EquIR implementation framework, this qualitative study investigates how adaptat…
Associations of the Covid-19 pandemic with social well-being indicators in Mexico
The currents study documents how the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with different well-being indicators in a LMIC. It suggests the urgent need to take actions to support vulnerable groups, particularly women, households with children and those in the lowest SES. If policy actions are not taken, the pandemic will increase social and gender disparities, and will jeopardize childhood development
Urban poverty and nutrition challenges associated with accessibility to a healthy diet
Gender, family separation, and negative emotional well‐being among recent Mexican migrants
Objective This study examined the scale and scope of family separation among Mexican immigrants in the United States and the association between family separation and immigrants' emotional health. Background Prior research documents the negative consequences of family separation on the health of immigrants. However, population‐level data on the exposure to family separation among Mexican immigrants living in the United States have been unavailabl…
Pre-Covid-19 Social Determinants of Health Among Mexican Migrants in Los Angeles and New York City and Their Increased Vulnerability to Unfavorable Health Outcomes During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Breastfeeding media coverage and beliefs during the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico
While the Mexican government endorsed the recommendation on breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic, communication was sporadic, inconstant and unequal across types of media. There was a widespread notion that mothers with COVID-19 should not breastfeed and due to differences on beliefs by socioeconomic status, health inequities could be exacerbated by increasing the risk of poorer breastfeeding practices and preventing vulnerable groups from …
Food insecurity measurement and prevalence estimates during the Covid-19 pandemic in a repeated cross-sectional survey in Mexico
Objective: To validate the telephone modality of the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA) included in three waves of a phone survey to estimate the monthly household food insecurity prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. Design: We examined the reliability and internal validity of the ELCSA scale in three repeated waves of cross-sectional surveys with Rasch models. We estimated the monthly prevalence of food insecu…
How do context variables affect food insecurity in Mexico? Implications for policy and governance
Objective: To assess, from a systems perspective, how climate vulnerability and socio-economic and political differences at the municipal and state levels explain food insecurity in Mexico. Design: Using a cross-sectional design with official secondary data, we estimated three-level multinomial hierarchical linear models. Setting: The study setting is Mexico’s states and municipalities in 2014. Participants: Heads of households in a representativ…
Syndemics of Severity and Frequency of Elder Abuse
Background: Elder abuse is a common phenomenon with important effects on the health and well-being of older adults. There are important gaps in elder abuse measurement, as it is usually reported as the absence or presence of elder abuse, disregarding its severity and frequency. Objectives: Identify different ways of measuring severity and frequency of elder abuse and assess whether different experiences of severity and frequency suggest syndemic …
