  • A site for all seasons? Prehistoric coastal subsistence in northwest Sicily

    Open Access•M A Mannino, Marcello Mannino et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology International•2012

There has been much debate about the role of marine resources, including shellfish, in prehistoric human diets, but there have been few studies that combine archaeological and present-day ecological investigations of coastal sites. This dual approach is being applied in a new field- and laboratory-based project that focuses on a group of coastal sites in northwest Sicily

  • Mesolithic middens and molluscan ecology

    Open Access•Ken Thomas, M A Mannino et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology International•2012

Large accumulations of marine shells are characteristic of mesolithic coastal sites in northwest Europe, but how intensively shellfish were exploited remains controversial. Excavation of a midden on the Isle of Portland and ecological study of presentday molluscs suggest that prehistoric human exploitation may have had a significant impact on local shellfish populations
