  • A Model of Actions and Norms

    Open Access•Birgitta S Tullberg, Jan Tullberg•CHAPTER•Biology and Politics•2011

One fundamental question in normative ethics concerns how norms influence human behavior and discussions within normative ethics would be facilitated by a classification that treats human actions/behavior and moral norms within the same functional framework. Based on evolutionary analysis of benefits and costs, we distinguish five categories of human action. Four of these – self-interest, kin selection, group egoism, and cooperation – are basical…

  • Stature and sexual stature dimorphism in Sweden, from the 10th to the end of the 20th century

Open Access•Anders Gustafsson, Lars Werdelin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

Mean stature in a population has been observed to vary with living conditions. If, and how, this affects sexual dimorphism in stature is not fully understood. We analyzed stature data from Swedish populations from the 10th to the end of the 20th century to investigate if male stature is more plastic than female stature in response to environmental changes. Further, we examined if there, as a consequence of this, exists an allometric relationship …

  • Proportionalism or liberalism—Two ideas of social justice

    Jan Tullberg, Birgitta S Tullberg•ARTICLE•Politikon•2006•Referências: 2

Proportionalism' refers to the general idea that, in a well ordered society, people sharing different socio-demographic background variables such as sex, race or class should have a proportional representation in either advantageous or disadvantageous groups. If this is not the case, discrimination is indicated. The central proposition of proportionalism is that direct discrimination can be justified as a counter-measure against indirect or struc…

  • Induced abortion ratio in modern Sweden falls with age, but rises again before menopause

    Open Access•Birgitta S Tullberg, Virpi Lummaa•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2001

  • A Critique of the Naturalistic Fallacy Thesis

    Open Access•Jan Tullberg, Birgitta S Tullberg•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•2001•Referências: 2

If the prescriptive "ought" is separated from the factual "is," an intellectual analysis of the real world is by definition without normative value. The naturalistic fallacy thesis -- maintaining that normative and descriptive spheres must remain separated -- is often presented in a weak sense that seems reasonable. However, only in a strong sense -- by strictly separating facts and values -- are fallacy accusations supported. We claim that this …

  • Till Death Do Them Part

Open Access•Jan Tullberg, Birgitta S Tullberg et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•1997

We have read the commentaries with great interest. They vary greatly regarding the possibility of achieving a general model for separatist conflict solution, and there are certainly both practical problems as well as difficult priorities of principles. Several issues are addressed by more than one commentator, so we chose a discussion by issue rather than by commentator

  • Separation or Unity? A Model for Solving Ethnic Conflicts

    Open Access•Jan Tullberg, Birgitta S Tullberg•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•1997•Citada por: 13•Referências: 18

This article outlines a consistent and rational model for solving ethnic conflicts. We argue that ethnic separation should be regarded as an alternative to national unity, and not simply dismissed as impossible. A decision on separation or unity should be made democratically by the group whose separation has been proposed. If separation is approved, migration over the border between the newly formed states should be part of such a solution. The a…
