  • To Europe or Not to Europe? Migration and Public Support for Joining the European Union in the Western Balkans

    Open Access•Artjoms Ivlevs, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 58

For decades, countries aspiring to join the European Union (EU) have been linked to it through migration. Yet little is known about how migration affects individual support for joining the EU in prospective member states. We explore the relationship between migration and support for EU accession in the Western Balkans. Using data from the Gallup Balkan Monitor survey, we find that prospective and return migrants, as well as people with relatives …

  • Does emigration reduce corruption

    Open Access•Artjoms Ivlevs, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2017•Citada por: 6•Referências: 31

We study the effects of emigration on bribery experience and attitudes towards corruption in the migrants’ countries of origin. Using data from the Gallup Balkan Monitor survey and instrumental variable analysis, we find that having relatives abroad reduces the likelihood of bribing public officials, renders bribe-taking behavior by public officials less acceptable, and reduces the likelihood of being asked for bribes by public officials. Receivi…

  • Does More Schooling Make You Run for the Border? Evidence from Post-Independence Kosovo

Artjoms Ivlevs, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2012

Does an extra year of schooling augment one's propensity to migrate? In a naive regression, which does not account for the potential reverse causality and omitted variables, the coefficient of education is likely to be biased. To deal with the problems of endogeneity, we use parental education as an instrument for own education. The data come from a survey on preparedness to emigrate from Kosovo, carried out in the summer of 2008. Two-stage resid…

  • Kosovo – Winning its Independence but Losing its People? Recent Evidence on Emigration Intentions and Preparedness to Migrate

    Open Access•Artjoms Ivlevs, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•International Migration•2012•Citada por: 6

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008, but substantial proportions of its population are expressing their lack of confidence by preparing to emigrate. In this paper, we present evidence from a customized post‐independence survey (1,367 face‐to face interviews) on emigration intentions in Kosovo, carried out in June 2008. Thirty per cent of the respondents from the Albanian‐speaking majority have taken concrete steps to mov…

  • From immigrants to (non-)citizens

    Open Access•Artjoms Ivlevs, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2012•Citada por: 4•Referências: 25

We study the determinants of the willingness to acquire citizenship of Latvia by 'non-citizens' - the former Soviet migrants and their descendants born on the territory of Latvia. The country of Latvia serves as an instructive laboratory for the analysis of naturalisations: due to the centrally planned nature of its 1945-1991 immigration flows, we can exclude the possibility that migrants came with an intention to acquire host country citizenship…

  • How to Cut the Seigniorage Cake into Fair Shares in an Enlarged EMU

    Open Access•Jørgen Drud Hansen, Roswitha M King•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2007•Referências: 2

The European Central Bank redistributes each year seigniorage from issuing euro notes to the National Central Banks of the euro countries. The key for this redistribution is, from 2008, based on the respective GDP and population proportions of the euro countries. Applying the distribution formula to the new EU countries from central and eastern Europe seems to give these countries a large net benefit compared with the seigniorage they bring in, i…
