Despite the availability of large amount of information on human bones, little attention has been given to the environmental conditions of bone weathering and preservation. Secondary hydroxyapatite (carbonated hydroxyapatite for primary bone mineral) as the most well known but intriguing constituent of the bone was determined (SEM) in the pore spaces of a Bitinian (2nd century BC) mans vertebral bone fragment as aggregates together with probable …

  • Preliminary chemical and micromorphological observations on Urartu (800–600 B.C.) ceramics, eastern Turkey

    Open Access•Erhan Akça, J M Arocena et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2010•Citada por: 3•Referências: 5

Anatolia has long been a major pottery production center of the ancient world, dating back 7000 cal yr B.P. The Early Iron Age Urartu Kingdom (800–600 B.C.) of eastern Anatolia is known for the production of high‐quality pottery, but little is known regarding firing technology and manufacture of these ceramics. Here we present a preliminary study of Urartu ceramic micromorphology and chemistry and suggest that the Urartus had good knowledge of lo…

  • Light penetration into Clarens sandstone and implications for deterioration of San rock art

Open Access•Kevin Hall, Ian Meiklejohn et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Citada por: 3•Referências: 4

In respect to the weathering of cave art exposed to the sun, cognizance has yet to be taken of the modified thermal conditions and the potential for endolithic biotic activity where the art is located on a light‐transmissive lithology. Where light penetrates rock, the light‐to‐heat transfer is not solely at the surface, and this leads to a thermal gradient that is different from where the paintings are located (and all transfer is at the surface)…
