Bayesian chronological models of the Nerja Cave (Málaga, Spain)
The Nerja Cave is a key archaeological site in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. It was inhabited by humans from the Upper Palaeolithic until recent Prehistory (30 and 3.7 ka cal BP). Various excavation campaigns performed in its external chambers (Vestíbulo, Mina and Torca) have recovered evidence of its use as habitat and burial site. Multiple studies on these matters have been published, but, until now, no Bayesian chronological modeling that ut…
Radiocarbon Dates for the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Occupations of Cova Rosa (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)
Four excavations have been performed at the archaeological site of Cova Rosa (Asturias, Cantabrian Spain): three of them in the second half of last century and the other in this decade. Although little of the archaeological material found in those excavations has been published, here we attempt the stratigraphic correlation of sections revealed by the different excavations and we present 22 new radiocarbon dates for bones and marine shells, built…
New archaeological data on the upper Paleolithic site of cueva de Malalmuerzo (Moclín, Granada, Spain)
The Malalmuerzo cave (Moclín, Granada, Spain) has been known since the 1980s for its archaeological remains and rock art, dated to the Neolithic and the Solutrean periods respectively. However, following thirty years of neglect, our team carried out a brief archaeological intervention after looters destroyed parts of the sediment fill of the cave. The refreshing of disturbed surfaces and the examination of a small undisturbed profile produced man…
Palaeoenvironmental and chronological context of human occupations at El Cierro cave (Northern Spain) during the transition from the late Upper Pleistocene to the early Holocene
Last Neanderthal occupations at Central Iberia
A structure from the sixth millennium cal BC with no artifactual content at San Quirce (Palencia, Spain)
Selection and Exploitation of Macro‐Vertebrate Resources During the Upper Palaeolithic in Northern Spain. New Evidence from Coímbre Cave (Peñamellera Alta, Asturias)
The exploitation of ungulates in the Cantabrian region during the Upper Palaeolithic is characterized by the appearance of progressively specialized hunting strategies, especially during the Magdalenian. This specialization focused on either Iberian ibex or red deer, depending on environmental or topographic features. Red deer, for instance, was hunted mostly on the plains while ibex and/or chamois was hunted in rocky and mountainous areas. Here …
Funerary practices or food delicatessen? Human remains with anthropic marks from the Western Mediterranean Mesolithic
New evidence of bones used as fuel in the Gravettian level at Coímbre cave, northern Iberian Peninsula
With the firm conviction that current archaeology needs to use all the tools that computer science provides, we have developed a project for digitising and structuring all the information gathered from the different excavation campaigns carried out in San Chuis hillfort (Allande, Asturias, Spain). In order to do it, we have developed the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) of the hillfort, in order to proceed subsequently to its virtualization. To …
The Iron Age in West Central Africa
Over the last few decades the number of radiocarbon dates available for West Central Africa has increased substantially, even though it is still meagre compared with other areas of the continent. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the Iron Age of this area we present and analyze a total of 22 radiocarbon dates obtained from sites from the island of Corisco (Equatorial Guinea). By comparing them with those from Equatorial Guinea, …
Where are the 'Asturian' dwellings? An integrated survey programme on the Mesolithic of northern Spain
Late Neanderthals at Jarama VI (central Iberia)?
Previous geochronological and archaeological studies on the rock shelter Jarama VI suggested a late survival of Neanderthals in central Iberia and the presence of lithic assemblages of Early Upper Paleolithic affinity. New data on granulometry, mineralogical composition, geochemical fingerprints and micromorphology of the sequence corroborate the previous notion that the archaeological units JVI.2.1 to JVI.2.3 are slackwater deposits of superfloo…
Radiocarbon dating casts doubt on the late chronology of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in southern Iberia
It is commonly accepted that some of the latest dates for Neanderthal fossils and Mousterian industries are found south of the Ebro valley in Iberia at ca. 36 ka calBP (calibrated radiocarbon date ranges). In contrast, to the north of the valley the Mousterian disappears shortly before the Proto-Aurignacian appears at ca. 42 ka calBP. The latter is most likely produced by anatomically modern humans. However, two-thirds of dates from the south are…
New human fossil to the last Neanderthals in central Spain (Jarama VI, Valdesotos, Guadalajara, Spain)
El Tossal de la Roca
A series of marked environmental changes took place during the transition from Pleistocene to Holocene, to which the hunter-gatherers adapted by modifying their technology and subsistence practices. In parallel with these changes, territoriality increased and significant transformations in artistic expression occurred. This paper assesses the archaeological record of the Iberian Mediterranean watershed to analyze various aspects of this adaptive …
Maltravieso.
