  • A Recording Method for Sixteen Nonadult Muscle Entheses

    J L A Palmer, Angela R Lieverse et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood in the Past•2024

Bioarchaeology lacks a system for recording the morphology of muscle and ligament attachment sites, called entheses, in growing individuals. Such information is useful in investigating factors that affect bone growth and development, including sex, age, puberty, pathology, and activity. This paper presents a standardized recording method for nonadult entheses based on 29 archaeological individuals of archivally known sex and age-at-death, ranging…

  • Diet and urbanisation in medieval Holland. Studying dietary change through carious lesions and stable isotope analysis

Open Access•Rachel Schats, Ijk Van Hattum et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Citada por: 6•Referências: 50

In the late medieval period, Holland experienced substantial socio-economic change. While the region was largely undeveloped prior to 1200 CE, the period after was characterised by extensive urbanisation and flourishing international trade, changes that would have impacted many aspects of life. This paper investigates the effect of these changes on diet by comparing skeletal collections from the early/central medieval rural village of Blokhuizen …

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to apply pubertal stage estimation methods to a sample from a rural community: the post-medieval Dutch skeletal collection from Middenbeemster. Puberty is a key developmental period involving transition to physical adulthood with broad societal relevance through its impact on fertility, morbidity, and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals (n = 55), including 27 of known sex and age-at-death, betw…

  • Understanding the post-Archaic population of Satricum, Italy

Open Access•Amanda Sengeløv, Giswinne van de Wijdeven et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

This paper contributes to the current debate regarding the ethno-cultural identity and origins of the post-Archaic (5th to 4th centuries BCE) population of the town of Satricum by introducing bioarchaeologial data including strontium isotope ratios, strontium concentrations, δ13C and δ18O values of tooth enamel, as well as dental morphological traits. Previous studies suggested a change in the original Latin population of ancient Satricum as a re…

This research compares two current methods for recording bony changes at muscle attachment sites, called entheseal changes (EC); the Mariotti method and the Coimbra method, to evaluate the concordance and comparability of results in a post‐medieval skeletal collection from Aalst, Belgium (n = 116). For both methods, the EC scores produce broadly similar patterns, are symmetrical and differ between age groups. Statistical differences between the u…

    Open Access•B Veselka, M B Brickley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Citada por: 4•Referências: 39

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates vitamin D deficiency patterns in individuals from birth to the beginning of adolescence. Microscopic computed tomography (micro-CT) evaluation of interglobular dentine (IGD) in teeth provides information on the age of disease onset and the number of deficient periods per individual, which will increase our understanding of factors influencing vitamin D deficiency prevalence, including sociocultural practices an…

  • How old are you now? A new ageing method for nonadults based on dental wear

    Open Access•Bjørn Peare Bartholdy, M L P Hoogland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 51

The main aim of this study is to present a novel method of nonadult (ca. 1–19 years) age‐at‐death estimation using the dental wear of deciduous, mixed deciduous‐permanent, and permanent dentitions, including the incisors, canines, premolars, and first and second molars. The stage‐based method is derived from degrees of dental wear in known‐age ( n = 39) and estimated‐age ( n = 11) nonadults containing 951 teeth from the predominately 19th century…

Lower levels of physical activity are often linked to higher socio-economic status (SES) in past societies. As an activity marker, changes at muscle attachment sites known as entheseal changes (ECs) have been used with varying efficacy. This study investigates this proposed link between EC as a physical activity marker and SES within one well-defined temporo-geographic context. EC data from 16 entheses in three skeletal collections from the postm…

  • Pathophysiological Stable Isotope Fractionation

    Gina Carroll, Gina M A Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2018

Within the past quarter century, researchers have taken steps to understand pathophysiological stable isotope fractionation within mammalian tissues more accurately. Biomedically, researchers have demonstrated that pulmonary disease, smoking, organ failure, anemia, anorexia, and changes in metabolic rate all affect the isotopic composition of human tissues and tissue by-products. This research strongly suggests that a relationship exists between …

  • The Role of Infant Feeding and Childhood Diet in Vitamin D Deficiency in a Nineteenth-Century Rural Dutch Community

    Andrea Waters‐rist, Andrea L Waters-Rist et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2018

Research on vitamin D deficiency in past and present populations shows the profound effect diet has on health. The rural Dutch community of Beemster, The Netherlands, revolved around cattle farming with access to enough sunlight to prevent vitamin D deficiency. However, analyses of a predominantly nineteenth-century cemetery revealed an unexpectedly high prevalence of rickets in non-adults (

    Open Access•Andrea Waters‐rist, Andrea L Waters-Rist•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 1

Excavations from a 7,000-year-old mortuary site in the Lake Baikal region of Siberia, Russian Federation, revealed an infant with osteomyelitis of the mandible. The lesion exhibits deformation of the anterior mandibular base, an extra-oral cloaca, and new periosteal bone layers on the corpus. Entry of oral microorganisms was likely via the deciduous left canine, with infection then concentrated around the forming permanent canine tooth germ. This…

  • The effect of growth on stable nitrogen isotope ratios in subadult bone collagen

    Open Access•Andrea Waters‐rist, A L Waters‐rist et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Citada por: 52•Referências: 87

Stable nitrogen isotopes have been used to reconstruct infant feeding practices as nursing infants have elevated δ15N ratios compared with their mothers. However, infancy is also a time of rapid growth, which may alter nitrogen isotope diet-to-tissue spacing. Several studies have documented a decrease in δ15N during growth in tissues with relatively fast accretion rates. This study investigates the effect that the growth of long bones, via collag…

Analysis of stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes (δ 15 N and δ 13 C) from subadults and adults allows for assessment of age‐related dietary changes, including breastfeeding and weaning, and adoption of an adult diet. In one of the first studies of hunter‐fisher‐gatherer subadults from Eurasia, three Neolithic (8,800‐5,200 calBP) mortuary sites from southwestern Siberia are analyzed to evaluate hypothesized differences in weaning age between Early …
