  • Comparison of an integrated versus stand-alone approach to post-validation surveillance for lymphatic filariasis in Niue

Open Access•Adam T Craig, Harriet LS Lawford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease caused by three species of filarial worm: Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori. The early stages of infection are often asymptomatic; yet, chronic infection may result in lymphoedema, elephantiasis, and hydrocele, imposing significant social and economic burdens. Global initiatives have dramatically reduced prevalence and transmission, and Niue, a self-govern…

  • Assessing the Early Impact of the Change in the Kava Importation Policy in Australia

Open Access•Winifred Asare‐doku, Amy Peacock et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2025

The Australian Government launched the kava pilot program to ease import regulations on kava, aiming to strengthen cultural and economic ties between Australia and Pacific Island countries. Implemented in two phases, personal importation in 2019 and commercial importation in 2021, the program was accompanied by a concurrent evaluation. The evaluation examined the health, social, cultural and economic impacts of the pilot program on the Australian…

  • Use of community-based surveillance to enhance emerging infectious disease intelligence generation in Indonesia

Open Access•Adam Craig, Adam T Craig et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Community-based surveillance (CBS) refers to a structured process whereby community members systematically detect and report events of public health significance occurring within their communities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Indonesia has taken steps to enhance national preparedness for future health threats, focussing on expanding the use of CBS. Given the novelty of CBS's use in Indonesia, we undertook t…

  • Information seeking behaviors of individuals impacted by Covid-19 international travel restrictions

Open Access•Pippa McDermid, Phillipa McDermid et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2023

Access to accurate information during a crisis is essential. However, while the amount of information circulating during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased exponentially, finding trustworthy resources has been difficult for many, including those affected by international travel restrictions. In this study, we examined the information-seeking behaviors of individuals seeking to travel internationally during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also explored…

  • Citizen science as a tool for arboviral vector surveillance in a resourced-constrained setting

Open Access•Adam Craig, Adam T Craig et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

While there are challenges to address, our findings suggest that citizen science offers an opportunity to overcome the human resource constraints that conspire to limit health authorities' capacity to monitor arboviral vectors across populations. We note that the success of citizen science-based surveillance is dependent on the appropriate selection of equipment and participants, and the quality of engagement and support provided

  • Epidemic surveillance in a low resource setting

Open Access•Adam Craig, Adam T Craig et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The system has made a significant contribution to public health security in Solomon Islands, but remains insufficiently sensitive to detect small-moderate sized outbreaks and hence should not be relied upon as a stand-alone surveillance strategy. Rather, the system should sit within a complementary suite of early warning surveillance activities including event-based, in-patient- and laboratory-based surveillance methods. Future investments need t…
