Psychosocial Determinants of Antiretroviral Treatment Adherence among Black Mothers with HIV
Black mothers with HIV (BMWH) face treatment adherence (TA) challenges, shaped by gendered anti-Black racism, oppression, and structural inequalities, which hinder healthcare access, support, and well-being. Compounded by mothering responsibilities, understanding the determinants of TA is critical to addressing their unmet needs. We utilized an explanatory cross-sectional, multiphase sampling survey design. Twenty-five BMWH completed a 30-min onl…
Parental Perceptions of Access to and Utilization of Services for Autistic Children in African American Families
Educating the Next Generation of Public Health Social Work Leaders
This article reports the findings of a 2-day public health social work (PHSW) summit that brought together PHSW educators, practitioners, and administrators to generate ideas for preparing the next generation of PHSW leaders. Data from focus groups revealed four themes: the importance of PHSW in our healthcare delivery system, the need for public health social workers to develop their professional identity, the significance of branding/promoting …
Major Depressive Disorder and Cardiovascular Disease in African-American Women
Major depression is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study used the National Survey of American Life (NSAL) to examine the co-occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and CVD in a nationally representative sample of African American women (n = 2,216). Results from a series of logistic regression models indicated high rates of MDD and CVD in the sample, and the African American women with MDD were 1.59 times more likely to…
Racial/Ethnic Inequality Among Older Workers
The experience of older racial/ethnic minority workers may differ from that of their non-Hispanic White counterparts because of persistent racial/ethnic differences; however, our knowledge of older minority workers is fragmentary. Using the cumulative advantage/disadvantage framework, this study aimed to identify factors that explain older Americans’ labor market participation after age 65 and whether racial/ethnic differences exist among those f…
Racial Differences in Volunteer Engagement by Older Adults
Volunteering is viewed as an empowerment process whereby older adults actively participate in the community and improve their well-being and health. Yet little is known about racial differences in volunteering, and even less in terms of perceived benefits from volunteering as a means of empowerment. The present study addresses this research gap by examining the differences in volunteer experience and perceived benefits from volunteering between o…

Mental Health Treatment Seeking Among Older Adults With Depression
Depression stigma, race, and treatment seeking behavior and attitudes
This study examined the relationship between internalized and public stigma on treatment‐related attitudes and behaviors in a community sample of 449 African American and white adults aged 18 years and older. Telephone surveys were administered to assess level of depressive symptoms, demographic characteristics, stigma, and treatment‐related attitudes and behaviors. Multiple regression analysis indicated that internalized stigma mediated the rela…
Why Lower Income Mothers Do Not Engage With the Formal Mental Health Care System
Lower income mothers who bring their children for mental health services also have high rates of depression and anxiety, yet few seek help. Maternal and child mental health are intimately intertwined; thus, the distress of both is likely to continue if the mother's needs are unaddressed. Because mothers overcome numerous instrumental challenges to help their children, the authors identify potential perceptual barriers to mothers' help seeking. An…
Child and Mother Client Satisfaction Questionnaire Scores Regarding Mental Health Services
This study used the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8) to examine the level of consumer satisfaction with children’s (ages 8 to 17 years) outpatient mental health services. Analyses were completed using both individual satisfaction items and a summed scale score. The CSQ scale had satisfactory internal consistency reliability for both mothers (alpha = .96) and children (alpha = .93). Parents’ratings of satisfaction with their child’s treat…
Infusing Public Health Content into Foundation and Advanced Social Work Courses
In order to prepare social workers better to intervene in the complex social problems affecting the health and social functioning of all populations, we propose the integration of appropriate public health content into the social work curriculum. In this paper we discuss the relationship between social work and public health, how public health content (i.e., epidemiology, prevention, community and population level interventions) fits in the socia…
Policy Implementation in Social Welfare
A review of the research on implementation of federal-state partnership programs indicates a need for more analyses of the post-legislative phase of social welfare policy. This paper addresses the importance of research on policy implementation in social welfare. It examines some critical tools in the policy implementation analysis process, presents a framework for analysis, and offers recommendations to stimulate interest in the study of the imp…
